Pre-Allstars[edit]

TFT Ancients Defense[edit]

The 2.90 – 7.00 era was under developer GEO. He ported DotA to Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne under the name TFT Ancients Defense. This took place sometime from late 2003 to early 2004, in the span of roughly six months.

  • Based on DotA 2.90

Pre-TFT[edit]

The following was under developer Eul. Kyle Sommer, known by the aliases Eul and Eulogy, was the creator of the first DotA map and invented the title Defense of the Ancients. These early DotA versions ran on Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and is also known as RoC DotA by the community. This lineage follows what led to the current Dota version today, and ignores other mods released by Eul.

2.00[edit]

DotA[edit]

The 2.00 – 2.90 era. Lasted from early to mid 2003.

1.00[edit]

The 1.00 – 1.62 era. Released in late 2002, around December. Runs on a Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos update released in November, so it could not have existed earlier.

DotA Beta[edit]

Earliest known versions are 1.4 – 2.0, and are the earliest playable versions of DotA. Speculative release date can be anywhere between August to November 2002.

  • Based on Aeon of Strife

Origin[edit]

Aeon of Strife[edit]

This is a custom map for StarCraft: Brood War created by Aeon64. Speculative release date can range from late 2001 to early 2002, based on the typical time frame a mod's popularity would last. Without updates, users typically lose interest in a few months. Historically however, multiple modders ported Aeon of Strife to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, indicating high popularity and a release date closer to 2002.
