This build is meant to pressure on your opponent with very fast Zergling speed while still getting a Lair as fast as possible with a good economy. Only 12 Hatch leaves you with more Drones mining, and 9 Gas, 10 Pool is tied as it makes 1 more Drone but uses it on a Hatchery. The Spire starts at the same time as with an Overpool or 9 Pool, but gets Zergling speed faster. All 1 Hatch builds have gather more gas than is able to be produced by 1 Hatchery so a Drone is taken off gas for a while. This is pretty much a slightly stronger version of Overpool, except is much weaker vs 12 Hatch.

So the overall goal of this build is to use very fast Zergling speed with a fast Lair to pressure your opponent before Mutalisks. Once Mutas are out it uses its decent economy to expand quickly and take a 2nd gas. This is at the cost of hard countering 12 Hatch that you would get with a 9 Pool.

Build Order[edit]

  • 9/9 - Overlord
  • 9/9 - Extractor @ 50 Minerals
  • 9/9 - Pool
  • 11/17 - Lair + Zergling Speed
  • @Lair Start - 1 Drone off Gas
  • 11+ - Zerglings
  • @100% Lair - Spire
  • @Spire Start - 1 Drone on Gas
  • 17/17 - Overlord
  • @100% Spire - Three Mutalisks

What to do/Build Order Clarification[edit]

vs. 9 Pool[edit]

Just constantly make Lings until your Mutas are out and stay alive. This build has 2 more Drones than 9 Pool, while not needing to expo until after Mutas so once Mutas are out you should be able to expo faster than him. The biggest risk here is just a ramp/choke break, so it may be a good idea to make a Sunken Colony after your Spire starts to be safe while you save Larvae for Mutas. If he goes Lair before Zergling speed then his Spire should be as fast as yours so a Sunken shouldn't be needed.

vs. Overpool[edit]

Same as 9 Pool, except while you have 1 more Drone from the opening builds he will have should have slightly more minerals, so he may be able to expand slightly faster than you.

vs. 12 Pool[edit]

He will either go Zergling speed or Lair first. If he goes Lair first, then pressure him with your much faster Ling speed. He will have more Lings than you to defend so engaging his Lings might be a bad idea. Just abuse the Ling speed and attack his natural Hatchery, try to kill units as they pop out, pick off Lings if he makes an mistakes in micro, and if he moves out too far to defend try to sneak some Lings into his main. Your Spire may not be early enough to force Spores, but you should be able to kill the Overlord he retreats from your main before his Mutas can get out in the map to defend.

If he goes Zergling speed first then he should have Ling speed just ~5–10 seconds after you, so there is little room to pressure him. However, he should need to make Spores because his Spire is so late. So just keep 2 Drones on gas even after your Spire finishes and pump Mutas and try to pick off Drones and whatever while you expo. You will need to make a Sunken if he chooses to go for a Ling break. And since they can't Spore their choke/ramp, if you can use your Mutas to scare his own Lings away from it you may be able to do a lot of damage with a run-by, since you can pick off Lings if he tries to run them from his natural to his main. It might also be a good idea to use your really early Spire to get ahead in air armor upgrade, but probably only once your expo has started.

vs. 12 Hatch[edit]

Same as 12 Pool, but even if he goes Lair first he will probably need to make Spores. And even if he goes Zergling speed first your speed will be done way before his so you can still harass him in any case. And you really need to do damage vs a 12 Hatch or you will lose. Even if you do a lot of damage, it may not be an easy win.

vs. 9 Gas, 10 Pool[edit]

Ling speed is useless in this case and the builds start out too similar to do any damage. The only thing that you can do is to take a slight disadvantage, cancel Zergling speed, and transition into a slightly weaker version of 9 Gas, 10 Pool. You should be able to put down a second hatch a little before your lair is done. Since you need to scout it before ling speed is done to adapt properly, this build order should probably only be done on 2 or 3 player maps.
