Chaos Esports Club, formerly known as Digital Chaos, is an American esports organization with a Dota 2 team based in Europe, founded in August 2015 by DotaCinema co-owner Shannon "SUNSfan" Scotten. On 1 June 2018, they re-branded to Chaos which aimed to make the brand more approachable and mainstream.[1]
History[edit]
Original Lineup[edit]
Digital Chaos' initial roster consisted of TC, YawaR, BuLba, Aui_2000, and Biryu, and was formed shortly after The International 2015.[2] After the team failed to qualify for The Frankfurt Major, the team's captain, Biryu was replaced by 1437.[3] The team continued to struggle, once again unable to secure a spot at The Shanghai Major, the team was rumored to be on the brink of disbanding.[4] In a shocking turn of events, Resolut1on decided to leave the CIS region and joined the team in February,[5] replacing TC. In the following weeks, Yawar and 1437 would depart the team, the latter to coach Team Secret during the upcoming major. Trying out some role swaps, primarily Aui's switch to carry, and new players, the team showed some promise and, with mason standing in as carry, the team was finally able to win a tournament, the BTS Americas #3.
Digital Chaos Version 2[edit]
The Shanghai Major shuffle saw Digital Chaos's roster gutted, when BuLba and Aui departed to fill the positions on Evil Geniuses, that Arteezy and UNiVeRsE had vacated. Those two in turn had departed EG to join Team Secret, who kicked both w33 and MiSeRy. The remainder of the Digital Chaos roster, Saksa and Resolut1on, banded together with the two former Team Secret members, as well as Moo from the shortly-lived roster of Team Archon, to form a new team[6]. The circle would be completed shortly after, when this line-up was signed by Digital Chaos.[7][8]
The newly formed Digital Chaos did well in American qualifiers, but struggled at international events, finishing second-to-last in every premier event they attended. At The International 2016, however, the team surged, placing second in their group and making into the grand finals through the lower bracket to take a surprising second place.[9] During the post-TI shuffle, Digital Chaos would replace Moo with MoonMeander, who had won two Majors during the previous season with OG. After some average results in LAN events, the team reached the semi finals at the Boston Major and won their first tournament in 2017 at ESL One Genting 2017.[10]
New North American Lineup[edit]
After ESL One Genting, the team hit a slump, failing to qualify for DAC, and finishing in last place at SL i-League S3. The team proceeded to lay low in the leadup to the Kiev Major, until Sunsfan abruptly announced his departure from the organization. Shortly after Sunsfan's departure, it was announced that the entire squad, including coach Blitz, and manager Slotherina, would depart[11] from the organization as well.
With the loss of its squad, co-owner Thomas Hancock, announced the arrival of the former players of Team Onyx,[12] the winner of the Kiev Major's North American Qualifier. At the Kiev Major, the new team showed promise in the group stage but were eliminated early in the playoffs at the hands of Team VGJ. Under the new banner, this team would continue to be a dominant force in the North American scene and managed to qualify for the biggest tournament of the season, The International 2017. At TI, the team managed to get past the group stage, making it into the Lower Bracket. There they fell in the second round to LGD Gaming after having eliminated iG.Vitality in the first round.
After The International, the two Korean members of the team, DuBu and Forev, are revealed to be playing with their former teammates from TI6's MVP Phoenix. Their replacements, former Cloud9-member MSS and MoonMeander, are revealed by Beyond the Summit at their first match in King's Cup: America. On the new roster, MSS will be playing in the offlane, while MoonMeander, who returns to DC after having left in April 2017, would take over as captain and hard support of the team. However, the teams results would remain disappointing, with the team coming close to qualifying to a number of LANs but never actually managing to, and by October MoonMeander had been replaced by DeMoN, who made his return to the organization. By November, Abed left the team and qojqva took over the mid position. This squad would be short lived and by the end of the month Digital Chaos disbanded. The organization would remain without a Dota 2 team for the remainder of the year.
Animal Planet[edit]
On December 20th, Greg "WhatIsHip" Laird was announced as the new CEO of Digital Chaos[13] and Jared "pandaeg0" Fletcher joined as General Manager, on January 8th.[14]
After many rumors had circulated, on March 11th, Animal Planet was picked by Digital Chaos.[15] With this, Aui_2000 makes his return to the organization after having been part of the original line-up in 2015, alongside ritsu, bryle, MoonMeander, and Stan King. However, this team would only have one LAN attendance, at GESC Indonesia, where the team finished last place. Their qualifier runs were equally unsuccessful. The players and the organization decided to part ways in April 2018 and all players were released from their contracts.[16]
paiN Gaming[edit]
The organization remained absent from the Dota 2 scene for the remainder of 2018. On January 15, 2019, a new team was announced with the signing of the former paiN Gaming roster.[17] With this, two former Digital Chaos members rejoined the team: w33 and MiSeRy. Both of them had been part of the organization during their legendary The International 2016 run and their victory at ESL One Genting 2017. During the Chongqing Major, TeaGuvnor joined the team as a trial coach. After the major he signed on as a full-time coach.
