Simon "Handsken" Haag (born April 24, 1994) is a caster and inactive Swedish player who last played for Twisted Minds. He is a former Heroes of Newerth professional who transitioned to Dota 2, and became strongly associated with multiple Swedish teams, including Alliance, across a ten-year playing career.

Biography

[edit]

Heroes of Newerth

[edit]

Handsken is a former Heroes of Newerth professional player. He initially played as a jungler, as he was one of the few players who could micro units well (a prerequisite for top junglers in Heroes of Newerth), but eventually transitioned to support, as he felt that he was not skilled enough to be amongst the best in that role. In the HoN Tour Season 2 Finals in 2014, he finished second with Bad Monkey Gaming.[1]

Around this time, he also began studying Economics, and was six months into his course before he moved into Dota 2 later that year. He found the transition challenging, due to the differences in tempo between the games, but most of all, he found himself blindsided by the competitiveness of the game, such as cheese strategies and concept of regional metas.[1]

Early Dota 2 career

[edit]

In 2015, he joined the Ninjas in Pyjamas, a team of five Swedish players. Although the team failed to qualify for THe International 2015, a win with joinDOTA MLG Pro League Season 2 proved to be a highlight for Handsken. He joined Complexity Gaming in November 2015, taking part in The Shanghai Major 2016, his first Valve LAN, finishing 5th-6th. He joined Alliance in September 2016, once again a team of all-Swedes, but he found himself released after a disappointing performance in the The International 2017 Europe Qualifier.

Dota Pro Circuit

[edit]

With a new Dota Pro Circuit system in 2017, Handsken played for The Final Tribe, which successfully qualified to several Minors, and also qualified for the China Dota2 Supermajor, although The Final Tribe finished joint-last. Tournament qualification proved to be rare for The Final Tribe after that, before Hansken rejoined Alliance in October 2019. His second stint, however, was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With tournaments shifting to an online-only mode, Alliance found themselves in the middle-of-the-pack in Europe.

With the return of the Dota Pro Circuit in 2021, Handsken and Alliance initially found themselves as one of the strongest teams in Western Europe, qualifying for the ONE Esports Singapore Major 2021 and WePlay AniMajor, although finishing poorly in both. Having secured enough DPC points to qualify to The International 2021, hopes were high for Alliance, but they eventually finished 9th-12th.

With the next season of the Dota Pro Circuit rolling around, Alliance tried a new roster, with Handsken and Nikobaby playing alongside Supream^, LESLÃO and Aramis. This roster, however, disappointed, as they finished 7th and were relegated, with Handsken, Supream^ and LESLÃO departing the team soon after. Handsken then joined goonsquad in Division II, eventually making it to Division I, beating Alliance, but both teams finished in the relegation spots. He rejoined Alliance in the 2023 Dota Pro Circuit season in Division II, but the team was not able to secure promotion. At the end of the season, Alliance finished 7th, and were only spared relegation by Valve revealing that this would be the final season of the Dota Pro Circuit.

Post-Dota Pro Circuit

[edit]

After The International 2023 (which Alliance did not qualify to), Handsken left Alliance and played on several stacks, notably Rest Farmers, who managed to qualify to Elite League Season 1, although they finished joint-last. He was also part of the debut roster for Twisted Minds, although this team failed to qualify for The International 2024.

Around this time, Handsken began looking for roles as a caster. He made his casting debut during DreamLeague Season 23 alongside Nomad, and has since commentated in several tournaments in a remote capacity, including Riyadh Masters 2024.

In January 2025, he revealed that he was no longer actively looking to play Dota 2, and was in the middle of finishing his economics course, as well as looking to move into casting, as he enjoyed watching Dota 2, if not more than playing it.[1]
