Overview[edit]
ZEN9, previously known as 'Natural 9' or 'N9', is an Australian Dota 2 Team and since their formation, they have been considered to be the best Australian Dota team. Marked with consistency and success they have shown great achievements since the advent of Dota 2, where players from MCity and LGD.au played in domestic and international tournaments in DotA under the name, Natural 9. ZEN9 was previously known as MCity and LGD.au during DotA Allstars and for a brief period during Dota 2 in its development stages.
History[edit]
2011-13: Transition to Dota 2 and inital success[edit]
After winning the BenQ The Clash 2 in late 2011, on the January 21, 2012, the team was acquired by Absolute Legends, and Scott "bLeeK" Jensen replaced David "r1sk" Arnous on Feb 26th.[1][2]
However, after their stint in The International 2012, Absolute Legends decided to part ways with the organisation. This was confirmed by GoDz, the team manager at the time with plans of a Natural 9 comeback. On December 11, 2012, Invasion sponsored Natural 9 and the players played under the tag Invasion-N9.[3]
2016-present: Return to prominence[edit]
In September 2016, blackshatan announced a comeback under the name Natural 9 with compatriots, balla, cas158, r1sk and sliCKz and later qualified for ROG MASTERS 2016 after reaching in the top two positions for the Oceania qualifiers with their perceived rivals at the time, Big and Black.[4] Their run at the main event in Malaysia saw them finish in the quarter-finals of the playoffs, losing to eventual champions, Team Secret.
Following the tournament, the team made two changes to their line up with the addition of XemistrY and lordboonz - who were at Big and Black previously - at the expense of sLiCKz and r1sk. With a replenished lineup, their first success was at the ZEN Pro League in Melbourne and took first place. In April 2017, they won the first season of AEF Dota 2 League, with an undefeated 14 match winning streak in the playoffs.[5] Throughout the remainder of the 2017 calendar year, Natural 9 remained dominant in the Oceanic scene, winning tournaments such as Devil's Playground Season 2, the Australian Dota 2 League Season 1 and the third season of the AEF Division 1.
Their success continued in early 2018 with a first place achievement at the Asian Dota 2 League AU Series 1 before the arrival of Water and Seventh Heaven during the Autumn. In ESL Australia's inaugural tournament, they finished runners-up to eventual winners, Athletico Esports losing 2-1 in the grand finals at Sydney in June. In December they participated in Australia's first Major event, the AMD Pro Series 2018 and won the inaugural AEF Premier League Division beating KSY 3-1 in the finals. Following their success in the calendar year, the team has temporarily disbanded following departures of some players.
