The originally planned format had the qualification as follows:
- 40 qualified players:
- Capcom Cup 2019 winner
- Top 16 players from the Global Ranking Point Leaderboard, 8 from each season split
- 22 players from the World Warriors Challenge
- Winner of the Last Chance Qualifier
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all offline events have been removed from CPT 2020, being replaced by 18 online events and a new format, with a reduced number of players, as follows:
- 20 qualified players:
- Capcom Cup 2019 winner
- Winners of the 18 online events
- A fan favorite among the Capcom Cup 2019 participants, voted by the community
- Four groups of five players each
- Seeding available on the CPT ruleset
- Top two players from each group advance to final bracket
