2022 Formula One World Championship is the 73rd season of the Formula One World Championship recognised by the FIA.
Format[edit]
- 22 Races
- Practices: 3 sessions of 90-minutes free practice, two held on Friday and one on Saturday
- Qualifying: 1 session of qualifying to determaine Main Race grid. Held on Saturday after Free practice 3
- Sprint: a Short-length race to determine Main Race grid. Held on Saturday on selected races
- For races with Sprint
- Qualifying moved to Friday and will determine Sprint grid
- Free practices decreased to two sessions, each held before Qualifying and Sprint respectively
- For races with Sprint
- Main Race: Full-length race at approx. 300 kilometres + 1 lap. Held on Sunday

- General
- All drivers now have free choice of starting tyre for the race on Sunday
- Budget cap reduced from $150m USD to $142.4m USD
- Sprint
- Points system for shortened races
- Following the controversy surrounding the awarding of points at
Belgium 2021, where the race was only run behind the safety car, new criteria has been introduced for uncompleted events.
- If less than 25% of the scheduled distance is completed, points are awarded on a 6-4-3-2-1 basis to the top 5.
- If 25% - 50% of the scheduled distance is completed, points are awarded on a 13-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis to the top 9.
- If 50% - 75% of the scheduled distance is completed, points are awarded on a 19-14-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 basis to the top 10.
- If more than 75% of the scheduled distance is completed, full points are awarded.
- Additionally, the fastest lap point is only awarded if a minimum of 50% of the schedule distance is completed whilst within the top 10.

- Safety car procedures and protocols
- New safety car procedures and protocols introduced which address the following:
- The unlapping of cars under a safety car period, changed from "Any" to "All" will be allowed to unlap themselves, if deemed safe by the race director.
- The safety car will be now withdrawn one lap after the instruction of the lapped cars may unlap themselves has been given.
- Aggressive acceleration, braking, and sitting alongside another car during the restart, in an attempt to seek a tactical advantage has been banned during a restart procedure.
