Chronology

The 2023 Formula One World Championship Azerbaijan Grand Prix was held in Baku City, Azerbaijan on the Baku City Circuit on April 28-30. It's the sixth Azerbaijan GP in Formula 1 history, the race debuting in 2017.

Race Summary[edit]

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix witnessed a thrilling battle between Red Bull Racing teammates Sergio Pérez and Max Verstappen, with Perez ultimately emerging victorious and securing Red Bull's unbeaten start to the 2023 Formula 1 season. While Perez's win was aided by a timely safety car deployment on Lap 10, his performance after taking the lead showcased his great driving skills.

Notably, Perez's strong performance has significantly closed the gap in the championship standings, reducing Verstappen's lead to six points. Meanwhile, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc managed to get his team's first podium finish of the season by securing P3. Although Leclerc started the sprint race and the GP from pole position, it didn't take long for Verstappen to use the DRS to overtake him on Lap 3. Soon after, Perez overtook Leclerc, positioning himself in P2.

The dynamics at the front of the race shifted dramatically when Nyck de Vries, driving for AlphaTauri, crashed and triggered a safety car. Perez took the oportunity to make a crucial pit stop. Because of that, Perez emerged in front of Verstappen, who had stopped just before the safety car was deployed but after De Vries' crash.

Lewis Hamilton engaged in a gripping battle with Carlos Sainz, ultimately fending him off to claim fifth place, with Sainz finishing P6. Hamilton's teammate, George Russell, finished eighth, but managed to secure an additional point for the fastest lap of the race. McLaren's Lando Norris showcased the team's progress with their upgraded package, securing P9, while Yuki Tsunoda of AlphaTauri got the final point available.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was not without its tense moments, as Esteban Ocon narrowly avoided disaster on the final lap. Ocon made a late pit stop for Alpine, coinciding with a gathering of photographers at the end of the pit lane. Fortunately, the French driver navigated the situation and managed to avoid any contact.

As Red Bull Racing continues to dominate the 2023 Formula One season, Sergio Pérez's well-deserved victory in Azerbaijan cements his position as a formidable contender.
