Chronology

The 2023 Formula One World Championship Miami Grand Prix was held in Miami, United States on the Miami International Autodrome, on May 5-7. It's the second edition of the Grand Prix after its 2022 debut.

Race Summary[edit]

With a pole position on a street circuit and with Red Bull Racing teammate and rival Max Verstappen starting 9th, it was expected that Sergio Pérez would drive to his third race win this season, but things did not turn out that well for the Mexican driver. The reigning world champion started gaining spots immediately after DRS opened. Verstappen double-overtook Charles Leclerc and Kevin Magnussen to jump to 6th early in the race and by lap 9, he was already 5th after a late-break, inside lunge past George Russell.

The technical power for the RB19 and Verstappen's own mastery propelled him even further past Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso and already on lap 15 he was chasing Perez for first place, which he took on lap 19 and held for the majority of the race, with the exception of an exciting, but short-lived battle on lap 47.

While it was another 1-2 for Red Bull Racing -- their fourth in five races and who now lead the constructors' championship by a hefty 122 points -- it was a bad weekend for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc could not finish higher than his 7th place qualifying, while Carlos Sainz lost two spots to finish fifth, increasing the gap to 3rd place Mercedes even further. The silver star, on the other hand, caught up to current runners-up Aston Martin, now trailing just six points behind.
