Chronology

The 2023 Formula One World Championship Monaco Grand Prix will be held in Monaco on the Circuit de Monaco, on May 26-28.

Race Summary[edit]

A dramatic, but oustanding qualifying session on Saturday set up the Sunday race at the Monaco Grand Prix. A tight battle between Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso for pole saw the Dutch find 0.3 seconds on Sector 3 to steal the pole from the F1 veteran. From there, it was a business-as-usual Sunday for the reigning world champion, who held the lead for all 78. By the end, Verstappen had almost a 28 seconds gap to Alonso, despite the surprise rain that started around lap 50. With these results, Red Bull Racing have now won every single race of the calendar so far, Verstappen winning four of the six races.

In the narrow race for 2nd in the constructors championship, Mercedes were the big winners of the weekend. Lewis Hamilton finished 4th while George Russell gained 3 spots to finish 5th, putting Mercedes within one point of 2nd-place Aston Martin by the end of the race. Aston Martin themselves banked only Alonso's points, as Lance Stroll posted a DNF after crashing on the wet at the hairpin.

The race weekend was even rougher for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc finished qualifying in 3rd, but suffered a 3-positions grid penalty for unnecessary impeding Lando Norris and finished the race 6th, with Carlos Sainz two spots behind at 8th after losing control on the now-wet track with his medium tyres.
