Mage
The Mage class is represented by Jaina Proudmoore. Mages are generally considered to be archetypal spell-casters and masters of magic. Mages excel at dealing damage instantly, either with very powerful single damage spells or strong area of effect spells.
Mages generally try to get as many powerful damage spells as possible, both to clear away enemy minions (e.g. Blizzard) and finish off the opponent (e.g. Pyroblast). For this reason, cards that buff spell damage, such as Kobold Geomancer, are typically quite valuable in Mage decks. Not that all Mage decks are built around spell damage---with a versatile hero power and all manner of ways to change the shape of the board, Mages can also run heavy aggression and beatdown decks quite effectively.

Strategy[edit]
One of the common Mage strategies is a spell burn deck. This means that the deck tries to kill the opponent with Spell cards and other direct damage, while using other spells and things like Taunt Minions to defend until all the direct damage cards can be drawn. The typical direct damage spells are Pyroblast and Fireball, and the most common defensive spells are Blizzard, Polymorph and Flamestrike, as well as the Secrets Ice Barrier and Ice Block.
Main Synergies[edit]
Most typical Mage deck combine minions that grant bonus Spell Damage, such as Kobold Geomancer or Azure Drake, with damage dealing Spells like Frostbolt or Pyroblast. For starting play Mana Wyrm and Mirror Image buy time for the Mage to build up safely.
Common Weaknesses[edit]
The main weakness to the spell burn deck discussed above are aggro decks. Decks that quickly summon lots of cheap minions to attack the enemy are tough for this deck to handle as most of the defensive cards are relatively high in Mana cost, and many target just 1 minion, or only last for 1 turn and are not permanent effects.

Lore[edit]
Mages, the most common of arcanists [1], are found all over Azeroth [2]. They focus on magic that creates and changes things, most often with the purpose of damaging their enemies and boosting the power of their allies.Such beings can obtain a familiar, which is a normal animal that gains new powers and becomes a magical beast when summoned to service by a Mage, while others choose to become focused mages. Mages also understand the workings of arcane energy so well they can counter most magic with great effectiveness. An adept Mage who has dedication to and natural predilection for one of the schools of specialization becomes more entrenched. At this point mages choose either evocation or transmutation as a preferred school and casts spells from their chosen school. The Mages of the Kirin Tor [3] first mastered the art of casting spells using the elements of ice and fire. Mages are also known for being able to summon elementals, usually water elementals, but can also summon air, earth, and fire elementals. The greatest mortal Mage ever to live is the naga Queen Azshara, who still lives. In fact, she may no longer be mortal.
The first known mages on Azeroth were elves. They existed before the breaking of the Well of Eternity and the Exile of the High Elves, who lived on the shores of the Well of Eternity and wielded its tremendous magic powers.[1]
