EVO 2015: Melee
EVO 2015 was the 2015 installment of the Evolution tournament series, the largest fighting game tournament series in the world. On January 20, 2015, it was announced that Super Smash Bros. Melee would be returning for a third consecutive year from July 17 to 19, 2015 at Bally's/Paris Las Vegas Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Melee was featured alongside Ultra Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Mortal Kombat X, Tekken 7, Killer Instinct, Guilty Gear Xrd, and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
Registration opened on February 1st, and by February 24th Melee had reached 1,000 registered, already surpassing 2014's amount. On March 10, it was announced that EVO 2015 would be the largest Melee tournament of all time by number of entrants, surpassing Apex 2015's 1037 registered entrants. Moreover, on May 25, it was announced that both Smash games would get more than 1500 entrants. On July 1, it was announced that Melee would be the third-largest game at EVO with 1,869 entrants, surpassing the previous record of largest Melee tournament by over 800.
Players from the MLG era shone at EVO, with Ken finishing in the top 16, Azen defeating Fly Amanita, HugS barely missing out on top 8, and ChuDat making it to top 8. Plup also surprised many with his run, defeating Mango and Leffen on his way to a 4th place finish. Druggedfox made his breakout performance, with victories over Lucky, S2J, and Duck as well as close sets with Leffen and Mango before finishing 9th.
Mango failed to take his 3rd consecutive EVO, finishing 5th after losing to Hungrybox.
