Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman is an American professional Melee player from Cinnaminson, New Jersey, currently residing in Orlando, Florida. He is widely regarded as one of the best smashers of all time, known mostly for his incredible character depth and knowledge of mechanics. He was ranked 10th in MPGR 2019. He was also ranked the 69th best Wii U player of all time on the PGR100.

Biography[edit]

Mew2King started playing competitively and attending tournaments in 2005 around his hometown of Cinnaminson, New Jersey and the East Coast in general. He is considered to be one of the best Melee players in the world due to his extremely technical and intelligent play style, earning him the nickname "The Robot". In Melee, he is widely considered to be the best active Sheik and one of the two best Marth mains (along with PPMD), and also has a very solid Fox secondary. During some time between 2008-2009, he was considered one of the two best players for Melee (along with Mango) and the undisputed top player of its sequel Brawl, having taken first place in the majority of singles events he attended for both Melee and Brawl. Mew2King was formerly ranked 1st on the now-defunct Tristate Melee Power Rankings[1]. He now resides in Florida.

Mew2King struggled in the scene when he first started due to his lack of player experience. He placed 25th at his first tournament, Gettin' Schooled 2. Over the course of the summer of 2005 he soon became a major threat in Melee's tournament scene, consistently placing in the money at nationals. Shortly before Brawl's release (and even some time after), he became so dominant that other top professional players at the time, including the players who had given him trouble in the past, were hard-pressed to even defeat him in a single game. During 2010-2013, Mew2King was still a major threat in Melee, but not to the degree he was before, suffering from declining tournament placings due to the presence of new rising stars in the scene. During late 2013, after years of not winning a major Melee event, Mew2King went on a winning streak where he won almost every singles event he entered, taking sets off of players who he had seldom defeated in recent times, including Mango, Hungrybox, and PPMD. This is commonly referred to as "The Return of the King."

In addition, Mew2King made many important discoveries about Melee on his own by testing several aspects of the game. This includes character weight, falling speed, attack knockback, priority, game physics, and so on. This information was posted online as a repository for Melee statistics[2], which, to this day, many casual and professional players refer to alike for more information about their character's data and inner workings.

In the past, Mew2King had been involved in a few controversial incidents. He was banned from the 2010 MLG Brawl finals after tournament organizers suspected him and fellow Brawl player ADHD of "forfeiting or conspiring to manipulate rankings or brackets". He also drew criticism after a pot-splitting incident with the smasher Unknown522 at the Revival of Melee 5 tournament. Aside from a few other circumstances, Mew2King has maintained a positive public image since early 2013. In response to rumors and criticism that he has received, he has publicly stated that he is actively working to improve his personality, acquiring feedback to try and correct flaws that he displayed in the past.[3]

Mew2King had started entering tournaments less frequently in 2015, even skipping EVO 2015, the largest tournament of all-time, citing serious hand pain as his main reason as well as lack of confidence. He has also said that he has struggled with depression over the years, which sometimes affects his playing ability.[4][5]

During most of 2019, Mew2King stopped focusing on Melee singles, as during that time he was focusing on Ultimate and Melee doubles, where he teamed with his static partner Plup, forming one of the best Melee teams in the world. He would make his return to Melee singles at The Big House 9, placing at an impressive 5th place whilst taking sets off of Rik, MikeHaze, iBDW, and Hungrybox.
