Controversy[edit]

Shine 2017 was the first major tournament to use the Universal Controller Fix (UCF) software modification for Melee, which makes certain controller-dependent mechanics such as shield dropping and dashback easier to execute. Every tournament set was to be played with this mod active.

However, in loser's side of Top 8, Leffen and ChuDat played their entire set without UCF, with ChuDat winning 3-2. As a result, the TOs decided that the set should be replayed, with both players agreeing.[1] Leffen won the rematch 3-2 and moved on to Loser's Quarterfinals, where he lost to Mew2King 2-3.

Following the rematch, the tournament organizers announced that ChuDat would be compensated for the situation. The specifics of the compensation were left confidential.[2]
