Chronology

Smash Ultimate Summit 3 is an invitational tournament, hosted by Beyond The Summit (BTS), that was held on August 26-29, 2021.[1]

The event was originally scheduled for June 11-14, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak.[2]

At the time the tournament was held, Smash Ultimate Summit 3 featured a prize pool of over $156,000 USD. This was the largest prize pool of any event in Super Smash Bros. history, beating BTS's own record of $155,669 USD set the previous month at Smash Summit 11.

Background[edit]

Smash Ultimate Summit 3 was originally scheduled for June 11-14, 2020, but was posponed in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, eventually getting delayed by over a year.[3]

Dark Wizzy was the first confirmed player, qualifying by winning Phantom 2020 on March 8, 2020; when the event was postponed, it was confirmed that his qualification would remain valid for the tournament's eventual new date.[4]

In April 21, 2021, Beyond the Summit announced that the winner of Collision Online 2021 three days later would qualify for Smash Ultimate Summit 3.[5] Sparg0 won the tournament, becoming the second confirmed player for the event, and the first person in history to qualify for Smash Ultimate Summit via an online tournament.[6]

On July 30, Beyond the Summit announced the seven players directly invited to the event: Dabuz, KEN, Maister, Marss, MkLeo, Tweek, and zackray.[7][8] Then-Beyond the Summit staff member Aiden confirmed that Glutonny from France had originally been invited, but that complications relating to travels from Europe (similar to those encountered by Swedish players Leffen and Pipsqueak, who were both announced for Smash Summit 11 but were unable to attend) forced Beyond the Summit to reverse their decision prior to the announcement.[9]

Six players qualified via the event's crowdfunding/voting system. Only players from Canada, Mexico, or the United States were eligible due to COVID-19 related travelling restrictions; additionally, players needed to be ranked on the PGRU Spring 2019, the PGRU Fall 2019, or the OrionRank 2020, to have been part of Smash Ultimate Summit 2, or to have placed high at at least one of several notable events listed by Beyond the Summit.[10][11] Players could offer their nominations from July 31 onwards, with the fans voting on Twitter from August 3 to August 6 to determine the 20 players who would move on to the Voting Phase, which started immediately afterwards, taking place in five rounds and seeing the two players with the most votes in the final three rounds qualify. The six players voted into the event were Aaron and VoiD on August 12, Atomsk and Riddles on August 14, and Kola and Charliedaking on August 16.[12]

On August 23, 2021, Cosmos earned the final spot for Smash Ultimate Summit 3 by winning Mega Smash Mondays 240, which acted as a last-chance qualifier for the event.[13]

Peanut and WaDi, the players who had received the third and fourth most votes respectively in the final round of voting, were flown to the event to act as alternates in the event that any of the non-American participants encountered travel issues.[14]

In addition to the voting system, the event had a number of eccentric goals to reach via the crowdfunding system. Those goals, which were all met, included, among others unrelated to Super Smash Bros. competition, Squad Strike tournament with players using the random character selection option, a USA vs The World Crew Battle, a Doubles tournament titled "Puppet Master" where a member in each team must play blindfolded, and the "Wifi Warrior World Championship", a tournament making fun of the input delays in wifi tournaments during the pandemic era, in which the players' controller input delay increases progressively during their matches, up to 5 seconds.[15]

Prize Pool[edit]

The prize pool is distributed as follows.[Inside Source]

The remaining 1.4% of the prize pool is split evenly between the two players eliminated in the last round of crowdfunding, Peanut and WaDi.
