General Information
[edit]The PGL 2006 (东风标致PGL2006星际争霸公开赛-PGL PEUGEOT StarCraft Open) was hosted by the PGL Committee in November 2006. Besides StarCraft Brood War Warcraft III was another title. The tournament was the predecessor of the PGL Seasons, that included more foreign players. In the first edition only SEn and Legionnaire represented the international scene. Four Korean professionals had also been invited.
The System
[edit]The tournament was divided into four stages.
Stage I
- The first was the team (aka groups) phase. This determined the top two teams. After the team ranks are known, each team had an internal tournament. From the top two teams, two on each team advanced directly to Stage III and the bottom two players move to Stage II. From the bottom two teams, the two losing players from the internal tournament wwere eliminated. The two winning players advanced to Stage II.
Stage II
- Eight players had to play this stage. A double-elimination tournament was held with the winner bracket and loser bracket finalists advanced into Stage III or Stage IV respectively.
Stage III
- Stage III was the knockout stage. A bracket was held with the losers continuing to play until four losers remain - those were knocked out.
Stage IV
- Final stage of the tournament.

Prize Pool
[edit]Stage I
[edit]The clan wars were played with the All-Kill Format, the mode was a Best of Seven. The most interesting aspect of this stage was, that the players could determine the order of the matches, e.g. who to send out first. The mutual interest to finish as good as possible was in the best interest for everyone, as a top spot would minimize the probability to get eliminated before the pay out places.

Stage IV
[edit]The tournament referees had a popularity vote. The audience could poll for one of the already eliminated players to advance. The Chinese Terran Phoenix66 won.
All remaining players had to play a round robin system to determine the ultimate seeds for the final stage. The best five players advanced into some knock out tournament, were they started to play the opponent according to their scored place. As a result the fifth placed player started against the player on spot four, and so on, until a player finally won the tournament.

Trivia
[edit]- During the second stage the players challenged each other: the loser of games had to do push ups. Apparently SEn had to do over 100 push ups during the day.[1]
