Overview[edit]

The 2008 IEF, or International e-Sports Festival was held from December 5-7, 2008 in Wuhan, China.[1][2][3] It was composed of eight players, featuring four participants from China and South Korea who were selected from a preliminary qualification process.[4][5]

Alongside the StarCraft competition, tournaments for Warcraft III and Counter-Strike were also held.[6][7] Players qualified for the competition after a preliminary qualification process.[8]

The 2008 IEF was the fourth in a series of collaborative tournaments between the two nations, following the 2005 CKCG, 2006 IEF and 2007 IEF, but would feature participants from Asia, Europe and the United States, as well, albeit not in StarCraft.[9][10] Players from these regions were invited to participant in the StarCraft competition, but they would choose to not do so. It is noted that although local accommodations were provided by the organizers, reimbursements of incurred travel costs were not.[11]

Tournament Information[edit]

The matches were played as a three-game per series format in the Group Stage, while the Elimination Stage bracket was a best of three format. The Group Stage, which was played as four-person round robins, enabled the selection of the top four finishers. The Elimination Stage then followed as a single-elimination bracket.[12][13]

Prize Pool[edit]

150,000 CNY was awarded among the top placing players according to the following distribution:[14][15]

Along with Warcraft III and Counter-Strike, the total prize pool for the four games was 530,000 CNY (~$77,000). The Chinese national qualifier also rewarded the top top finishers with cash prizes of 40000 CNY, 20000 CNY, and 10000 CNY for first through third places, respectively.
