Opening

Overview[edit]

The 28 Nexus opening is a standard Fast Expansion build order that can adapt to any situation. It enables Protoss to take a fast Nexus at the Natural Expansion, while being safe from aggressive openings. A high level of Dragoon micro may be required against very aggressive openings, such as 2 Factory builds or Strong FD openings.

Build Order[edit]

"Basic Build"
  • 8 - Pylon
  • 10 - Gateway
  • 11 - Assimilator
  • 13 - Cybernetics Core[1]
  • 15 - Pylon
  • 16 - Dragoon
  • 19 - Singularity Charge[2]
  • 21 - Dragoon
  • 24 - Pylon
  • 25 - Dragoon
  • 28 - Nexus[3]
  1. Send this Probe to scout
  2. Take one Probe off gas
  3. Put Probes back on gas

From here, the build varies depending on game plan, but a common, safe extension is as follows.

"Build Extension"
  • 29 - Robotics Facility[1]
  • 30 - Dragoon
  • 32 - Pylon
  • 33 - Gateway
  • 33 - Gateway
  1. There will be a slight cut in Dragoon production

Execution[edit]

Note that the first Probe can be sent to scout anywhere between 8 and 15 supply. Common times to scout are after placing the first Gateway, Assimilator, or Cybernetics Core.

Gas-heavy builds, such as 2 Base Arbiter may need to keep all three Probes on gas.

The first three Dragoons should be sent to the opposing base to put on pressure and gather information. Note the opposing Marine count and Siege Tank timing if possible. Versus early aggression, these early Dragoons will be microed back to pick off units and delay the push.

An Observatory should be added as soon as the Robotics Facility is finished, and Observers should be built immediately. The first Observer is used to scout what Terran is doing and should be sent straight to their base. A third base should generally be taken with the second Observer, with Probes and Dragoons being built non-stop the meantime. The third unit produced out of the Robotics Facility can be an Observer or a Shuttle. This decision comes down to whether the Shuttle is necessary to defend a timing attack or punish a Terran who is taking a third base too greedily.

If the Terran is going for a two base timing attack, such as a 5 Fact, add additional Gateways (up to a maximum of ten) and a Citadel of Adun for Leg Enhancements. A general rule is to add two more Gateways than the Terran has Factories, though more may be necessary in some cases.

Transition[edit]

A Forge, second Assimilator, and Citadel of Adun should all come down at around the same time. Dragoon production should stop at around 22-24 Dragoons. Utilize pylon walls at bases to minimize the number of units or Photon Cannons needed to defend them. Photon Cannons should generally be added after 4 bases against a passive Terran. If the Terran is going for a 2-1 timing attack (early double Armory and Starport), a 4th and 5th base can be taken safely while on a low number of Gateways. If the Terran does not have a second Armory or a Starport, add additional Gateways while on four bases.
