First added on October 9, 1998 as Blizzard's Map of the Week, Big Game Hunters (BGH from now on) was added to the WebMaps folder when Brood War was released. Since then it has become a very popular map for 2v2's and larger team games on

This map is based on Hunters and follows the same layout, but gives players more mineral patches and an additional vespene gas geyser in each main.

Nevertheless, BGH proved to be an extremely successful map and even has developed a fanbase on its own that has refined Strategies on this unique map to an extremely high degree.

Notable Features[edit]

  • "Unlimited Resources" - There are 15 mineral patches (9 is standard) with each containing 20,000 minerals (1,500 is standard). There is 2 Vespene Gas geysers (1 is standard) with each containing 50,000 gas (5,000 is standard). The naturals contain one half this amount. The middle has only 12 mineral patches but 20,000 minerals and 50,000 gas.
  • Tankable Natural - Every natural is able to be sieged from another base, gives terran an advantage if the game drags on.
  • Small cliffs behind mineral line on main - Can be used to place scouting over or for muta harass. It's also popular to go for fast Tank Drops on those cliffs.
  • Center - most paths between bases go through the center. In 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 games holding the center is very important - the opponent's team can't gather forces together if the center is held and the team holding the center can attack any of opponent's player at once. Think of the center as "headquarters."
  • 12/11 positions - Both these bases virtually share the same natural, and can be walled at the choke with a single barracks, hatchery, or gateway.
  • 3 and 9 o'clock positions - both have larger and non-comfortable shape main, this gets no advantage but makes enemies drop easier to implement.
  • 6 and 7 o'clock positions - these positions can share a wall-in/choke in team play.

BGH Community[edit]

There has been much controversy with the BGH community as most people considered it (and still do) to be skill-less map played only by newbie players in public games. What most of those people don't know, is that there has been a core BGH community pretty much since the release of the map. There were even several sites that run a BGH league. First one, consisting mostly of Germans, was that started in 2001. and lasted for few years. Second one was a smaller spin-off of the more popular league and was run on site. After that, around 2004., a new league emerged and unlike the previous German leagues, this one was supposed to be an international one. It was run on site, but the international approach didn't really pay off as the league ended after the first season.

After that, European scene stagnated for a while with community projects. On the other hand, a Malaysian BGH player lousy_robot started a sometime in 2005. After receiving quite a few positive feedbacks from its readers, the blogspot got his own domain, and as of February 11., 2006., it was known as Around this time the BGH community began getting some spotlight, more specifically, when a low money map player Fayth (Canadian WCG Finalist) played a series of 1v1 games on BGH vs a BGH player Fauna and lost most of them (Thread at

This series of games, combined with a BGH Pimpest Plays (Thread at lead to the most notable event in BGH community history - a showmatch between (renamed to at that time) and which culminated in bringing the BGH community closer to the low money map players (Thread at

On June 9, 2009., a new BGH community website emerged with domain was successful for many years and was active until 2014, and finally shut down circa 2016.[1] slowed down in 2011.[2]
