Blast Furnace was released on October 30th, 1998 as Blizzard's Map of the Week.[1]
Due to the fact that the three and nine o'clock bases are on high ground while the others are on low ground, the map is positionally imbalanced. The proximity to high ground of the minerals and gases of the various bases also contributes to the positional imbalance.
