Central Plains is a Starcraft: Brood War map made by [Ragnarok]Valkyrie. It was selected as one of the new maps for the 2010-2011 season of the Shinhan Bank Proleague.

When news of the map pool arrived on TeamLiquid, the map was initially translated as Middle Hill[1], until the community noticed similarities with an older map called Central Plains.[2] This earlier beta version appeared as a candidate for Round 4 of the 2009 Proleague.[3] Its unique architecture included a gas expansion in the main, an island expansion, and an inside gas expansion backed by a cliff. By the time the map was adopted in Proleague, these had been replaced with a somewhat more conventional layout.

In beta testing for the 2010-11 season, when the league's sponsor was still uncertain, the circular Shinhan logo was replaced by a Proleague "P" emblem.[4]

As most teams would only send Protoss players out on this map, it was removed after the first round and replaced by Bloody Ridge.

Notable Features[edit]

  • Egg ramps - The ramp leading into a back-door third is blocked by Zerg Lurker Eggs. With 10 armor these require a lot of effort to be destroyed until, e.g., Psi Storm or Siege Tanks come into play. Workers can glitch through them when ordered to mine if given vision over the cliff as there exist minerals directly adjacent to the eggs.
  • Cliffed Natural - Much like as on Lost Temple, a cliff overlooks your natural expansion. The cliff is much smaller than on LT though, making it impossible for units on it to stay out of Dragoon/Lurker range.
  • Backdoor Expansion - In addition to the natural, the backdoor expansion with gas promotes macro-heavy game-play.
  • High-Ground Bases - Many of the bases are on the high ground, and are difficult to assault using melee and short-ranged units.

Alterations from the beta version to the finished release are too numerous to count as parts of the map were completely redesigned. See the reference images below.
