Detection

From Liquipedia StarCraft Brood War Wiki

Detection is an ability of certain units and buildings. It enables them to see cloaked and burrowed units. It can helpfully be differentiated into mobile and static detection. Some effects also provide temporary Detection or force hidden units to be seen.

Towers such as the Missile Turret have a detection range of 7. Mobile detectors such as the Science Vessel have a detection range equal to their sight range, so Observer and Overlord sight range upgrades increase the detection radius as well. [1] Mobile detectors were originally documented by Blizzard as having a static detection radius [2], but this has later been discovered to not be the case.

Mobile Detection[edit]

Static Detection[edit]

Detection Effects[edit]

Terran[edit]

The Terran Comsat Station's Scan enables you to see cloaked units in the scanned area for the duration of the scan.

The Spider Mines laid by Vultures will attack cloaked units, even if they are not detected.

Units or spells with splash damage such as the Siege Tank, Firebat, or Irradiate can damage undetected units, although Irradiate will not deal splash damage to burrowed units. Attacking your own units with a splash attack will damage enemy units within the splash radius even if they are cloaked.

Mobile detectors can be blinded by Optical Flare to nullify their detection ability.

Protoss[edit]

Units or spells with splash damage such as the Archon, Reaver, or Psionic Storm can damage undetected units. Attacking your own units with a splash attack will damage enemy units within the splash radius even if they are cloaked.

Zerg[edit]

Units affected by Plague, Ensnare, or Parasite are revealed for the duration of the spell. Units already affected by a Devourer's Acid Spores will stay visible until the spores wear off. Casting Parasite on an opponent's detector will grant the casting player vision of all cloaked and burrowed units it has vision of. A Lurker can damage undetected units with its spines, while targetting some other unit.
