GOMTV Classic

From Liquipedia StarCraft Brood War Wiki

The GOMTV Classic is a tournament that was created in 2008, first as a 16 player invitational event, and then as an open tournament.

  • Tournament format — single-elimination in Bo3, Semi-Final and Final matches are in Bo5.
  • English commentary — Nick “Tasteless” Plott and Daniel “SuperDanielMan” Lee commenting in English.
  • Streaming and Premium content.
  • Blizzard certified — in June 2009 Blizzard teamed up with GOMTV and sponsored the event with 50 million won.
  • Approval from KeSPA has varied and sometimes been in confusion. As a result, not all teams have sent players to the tournament each season.

Because GOM TV did not have the approval of KeSPA, some teams that had participated in Season 2 did not participate in Season 3 (4 teams).

During Season 3, in June Blizzard partnered with GOMTV sponsoring the event with 50 million won to increase the prize pool.

The Future of GOMTV Classic[edit]

As of October 2009, the future of GOMTV tournament seem to be in jeopardy. Only 5 teams have said that they are interested in competing in the GOMTV tournament while the other teams have backed out, claiming the workload on the players is too high. There seems to be another reason, supposedly, which is the fight between Blizzard and KeSPA over the rights to StarCraft II tournaments, and KeSPA is believed to have ordered some of the teams to back out from the GOMTV Classic.
