Help:Reusing and remixing Liquipedia content

From Liquipedia StarCraft Brood War Wiki

Textual content[edit]

Textual content on the wiki is available for anyone to reuse and remix under a Creative Commons Attribution–Share Alike 3.0 (CC–BY–SA 3.0) license. What does this mean?

You are permitted to reuse and remix the content, without having to first seek permission, if and only if the following two requirements are met:
  1. You must give attribution, or credit, to the content creator.
  2. Any derivative work you produce using the content must, in turn, be licensed under the same CC-BY-SA 3.0 license or one that is compatible to it.

These two conditions must both be met, or else you do not avail of the automatic permissions grant that the license provides otherwise. As such, providing credit, but not licensing derivative works in a compatible manner is insufficient. Likewise, licensing a derivative work in a compatible manner, but failing to provide credit, is not enough. If and only if these two conditions are met is your reuse and remix of Liquipedia’s textual content legitimate.

Images and media content[edit]

Images and media on Liquipedia are not automatically licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0. This is because it is hard to require that content creators license the works that they provide to us under such restrictions. As such, it is imperative to examine the individual copyright status and reuse provisions of each image and media file it is you might wish to remix or reuse.

On Liquipedia, we make figuring out this critical information a simple task through the use of our {{FileInfo}} template. This template allows for recording of essential metadata. We not only include the copyright status and reuse terms of each file, but also other bits of information which enhance the file’s encyclopedic utility on the wiki.

There are a fixed number of licenses available for content creators to provide their content to Liquipedia. The content creator’s choice significantly impacts your ability to reuse and remix their content, and can even legally prohibit you from engaging in such activity. As such it is important to figure out if you can or can not do it. The following is a summary of Liquipedia’s available image and media licenses:

Copyrighted[edit]

These works have been determined to have been uploaded onto Liquipedia without permission or proof of permission granted to the uploader by the relevant rights-holder. They will be deleted from Liquipedia in time. Reuse and remix of these files is highly discouraged and illegal under copyright law.

Copyrighted fair use[edit]

These works are on Liquipedia under a Fair Use justification stating that their presence and educationally transformative use on Liquipedia are allowable under statutorily-provided exemptions from copyright law in the United States. Our fair use assertion should not be construed as legal advice towards your own decisions about using the content.

Copyrighted permission[edit]

Permission to use and display these works on Liquipedia has been granted by the rights holder under specific terms that are noted in the {{FileInfo}} template. In most cases, reuse and remix of these works without the permission and consent of the rights holder is not legal. Contact them (and not us) about this.

Free Art License[edit]

Some of the logos and art we have generated for the wiki have been released under this license. It is very similar to CC-BY-SA, in that it requires attribution, but does more to define what attribution must entail. Specifically, under the Free Art License, you must mention the author, the title of the work, the date of which the work was created or first published. In addition, when applicable, you must name the author(s) of the work and include where to find the originals. The Free Art License differs in that you must also relicense the remix of the work under the same Free Art License. Like a Creative Commons license, you do not have to seek individual and specific permission to reuse or remix works licensed in this way. http://artlibre.org/licence/lal/en

Public Domain[edit]

These works either do not fall under copyright protection (for a number of limited statutorily-defined reasons), or have been dedicated by the content creator into the public domain. Public domain files can be freely reused and remixed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain

Blizzard Files[edit]

These are generally in-game assets and screenshots from the game used to illustrate game-specific articles on the wiki. Their use on our wiki is made under Blizzard’s own intellectual property guidelines for use of their works by fan sites. Refer to those guidelines to see whether your use or remix would be legitimate. http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/legal-faq.html
