History of Korean Professional Scene/Golden trophies

When OnGamenet StarLeague established itself as the most prestigious tournament in Korea, it created special trophy to be awarded to the winner of three OSLs. While BoxeR had opportunity to win one during fifth OSL, he was denied the feat by GARIMTO and despite reaching the StarLeague final on three more occasions, he was never able to win the elusive prize. It was only after NaDa finally triumphed in 2006 in his third OSL was Golden Mouse finally awarded. OnGamenet initially expressed will to extend the special award beyond Golden Mouse into platinum and diamond (5 and 7 leagues, respectively)[1] - however it proofed to be impossible feat to win more than three starcraft leagues of any kind and Golden Mouse remained ultimate trophy, the highest honor progamer could reach that wasn't subject to opinions of viewers and peers. Throughout Starcraft proscene existence, only four players were able to win Golden Mouse:  NaDa, Zerg JulyZerg, Zerg Jaedong and Terran Flash.

Second to OSL, rival StarLeague started, initially under the name of KPGA Tour, it was quickly renamed into MBC Starcraft League. Creating its own counterpart to the Golden Mouse, even if less impressive, the special award for winning three MSLs was a Golden Badge - which was a badge like one for winning a single MSL but made out of gold. This honour proved to be marginally easier to get, with five players receiving it:  NaDa, Terran iloveoov, Zerg sAviOr, Protoss Bisu and  Flash.

As the only player who won both Golden Trophies, NaDa and Flash are widely regarded as the most successful starcraft players of all time. They are also the only players who were at the same time champions of both Starcraft Leagues.

Upon winning his third ASL title in November 2017, Flash received (on top of a regular trophy) a Golden Ruler. It is currently unknown if AfreecaTV plan to extend this tradition, as Flash is (at the time of writing - 31/12/2019) the only player to have won more than one ASL championship.

  • Third golden mouse (Jaedong's) is supposed to contain 200g of pure gold which translated into ~5668$ worth of gold alone[4][5] at the time it was ordered.
  • Fourth golden mouse (Flash's) is supposed to contain 275g of pure gold which at the time it was awarded was worth ~11700$[6].
