Description[edit]
The map Hwarangdo was introduced in the 2008 EVER OnGameNet Starleague, and has been the only league to use it so far. It is a two player map, featuring a ridge of high ground along the middle, with several wide ramps leading onto it. Both bases have a mineral-only natural expansion, the map is characterized by the second entrance to this area, a small and thin high ground ridge connecting the natural and a gas expansion, while the main entrance remains the two bridges facing the middle of the map. The players can secure two gas expansions and two mineral-only expansions before even entering the middle's raised area. Picking different gas expansions as the second or third base is usually an important aspect of strategy on this map.
Notable Features[edit]
- Two entrances into natural - The two entrances are still close, so various Fast Expand openings are semi-viable in PvZ, but they do not provide the usual second gas that is the starting point of most such strategies. The second entrance from the high ground provides easier access for harass and early game aggression, and a good siege position for Terran.
- Raised middle area with wide ramps - The middle area is often the battlefield for the biggest clashes on this map, and also the usual macro division, securing either of the two gas expansions on this high ground usually tips the scales in favor of the victor.
- Unbuildable high ground behind the natural - This helps the mutalisk (especially with mutalisk stacking) and other air harassment of the expansion area, as well as sneaking in any kind of drops. Since the high ground here is unbuildable, only flying units or buildings, and Comsat Scan are able to provide vision above it.
- No natural gas - The lack of a gas geyser at the natural is extremely non-standard when compared to other maps. Though it affects all match-ups, Protoss' reliance on gas in PvZ makes it a difficult match-up to play on this map.
Interesting facts[edit]
- The name Hwa Rang Do is Korean for "The way of the Flowering Manhood", and it is the name of a Korean martial art. [1]
- July is the most successful player on this map, boasting a perfect 4-0 record. [2]
