Liquipedia:Frequently Asked Questions

From Liquipedia StarCraft Brood War Wiki

When starting out with the wiki for the first time, you'll probably have a few questions. We have collected some common ones here! If your question is not covered, be sure to ask us in the Discord server.

Basics[edit]

How do you communicate with other contributors?[edit]

We use a Discord server! Join us and talk on the Starcraft channel :)

How do I get started?[edit]

While wikicode (the text you see on the site) may look complicated at first, it doesn't take long to become familiar. Key is that you start editing, you learn by doing. The easiest way to start is by creating whatever page you want, e.g. for a player (or even yourself, as long as it's in your user space in that case). Simply grab another similiar page and edit the values. On the main page we have pages that need improvement listed in the Want to Help section. If you are not in the Discord already, join it! You can also find a TODO list in the Discord header or in the pinned messages.

What is userspace and what is mainspace?[edit]

Mainspace is where notable, high quality Liquipedia pages are. A page should only be on the mainspace if it meets the Liquipedia:Notability Guidelines. All pages on the mainspace should be finished. Pages for on-going tournaments are an exception if they are kept up to date as the tournament progresses.

Pages about small fun tours or lower level players or strategies can still be on the wiki, but only in the userspace.

You can think of userspace as a place for experiments, drafts, testing and so on.

How do I tell if the page is on userspace or mainspace?[edit]

Pages in userspace are prefixed with User:SomeUserName, for example, www.liquipedia.net/starcraft/User:Awerti/SomePageName

Pages in mainspace have no prefix, for example, www.liquipedia.net/starcraft/2020_Afreeca_Starleague_Season_9

What are templates?[edit]

Templates are a way to easily reuse wikicode on various pages. For example, if you want to display Thanks FAQ bot! on multiple pages, you could stick that in a template called FaqBot and then call it on multiple pages using {{FaqBot}}, which would cause it to display Thanks FAQ bot!.

Templates have their own namespace. FaqBot template would be located at https://liquipedia.net/starcraft/Template:FaqBot

Using {{WCG Navbox}} adds a detailed navigation bar with links to all World Cyber Games main events at the top of the page. All WCG pages have it. And changes done to this template will be reflected on each page it is used on.

This template is located at: https://liquipedia.net/starcraft/Template:WCG Navbox

Template pages usually have documentation, so if you find a template you like on some page, then you can look up how to use it. For example, Template:MatchList. Just enter the template name in the search bar.

You can find out more about templates on the help page: Help:Templates.

What images are needed for teams? Is there a naming scheme?[edit]

For every team, we need a big and small logo. The big logo should be as big as possible (within reason) and can be any dimension, the small logo should be 120x50. They both need to be transparent. The big logo should be named TeamName.png while the small logo should be named TeamNamelogo_std.png. Be sure to give appropiate credit (see the next question).

How to upload images?[edit]

Images have to be uploaded on the Liquipedia Commons wiki. Follow the instructions there, and make sure that you have the right to upload and use the image!

When an image is uploaded to Commons, you can use it here on a page by using {{File:ImageName.xxx}}. Image names are case sensitive!

Can I upload any image, even copyrighted ones?[edit]

We can use anything that falls under fair use under that license, e.g. team logos. You do this by providing the following description: {{FileInfo |license=fairuselogo }} Actual pictures we have a copyright repository for, which shows from who we have received the right to use their images and under which conditions:

Copyright repository over on the Commons wiki

These work the same way as the fair use license, simply fill them out and put them in the description. If the copyright repository does not contain the respective license, we need to request it. DM or get into contact with the copyright holder in whatever way you want, and request them whether Liquipedia can use the image. If they are okay with it, please ping one of the Liquipedia staff about it, so that it can be added to the repository.

What to do if players have the same name/ID?[edit]

Using a link like ClouD is not a good idea because there are 2 different players that have used this ID - ClouD_(Amateur) and ClouD_(Cha_Jae_Wook). Multiple approaches have been used on the wiki to fix this issue.

Having a disambiguation page is good, because if new imprecise links get added, they will lead to the disambiguation page, instead of the wrong place.

You can also add a small notice about the other player on the page, like here: Soulkey or here: SoulKey

If one player is much more accomplished, he can keep the main page, while the lesser known player's page is called X (Zerg), X (Amateur), X (American) or something similar.

How to display content in boxes or columns?[edit]

You can use {{Box}} for square elements (images, brackets, group tables, other kind of tables, etc) or for text you can use {{ColumnStart}} & {{ColumnEnd}}. Other column templates are outdated and should not be used.

Country list template can be used to display a list of country flags.

Advanced[edit]

How do I link page of the same player/tour on a different wiki?[edit]

Put this at the top of the page: {{Liquipedia links|starcraft2=Flash}}, and substitute starcraft2/Flash with names of the wiki and player.

What does purging a page mean?[edit]

Purging a page clears the cache and forces the most current revision to appear, it can be thought of as a full refresh. Read more about it here

You can purge a page by adding ?action=purge at the end of the page link, for example https://liquipedia.net/starcraft/PlayerX?action=purge. You will be asked if you want to clear the page cache, press ok to confirm.

What is a concept?[edit]

We have a lot of data on our wiki: player names, earnings, match scores, etc. Thanks to a tool called Semantic Mediawiki (Mediawiki is the platform the wiki runs on), or SMW, we can ask the wiki for this data. For example, go to Day9's player page, click edit and now click preview. Scroll all the way to the bottom. You'll see a number of "properties" being set, e.g. has name: Sean Plott. Since this property is now set, we can then ask (aka query) the wiki for this info later: [[Has name::Sean Plott]] which will return his page. With this in mind, we can look at concepts. Doing these queries every single time someone visits a page is intensive for the servers, so a concept allows us to ask a wiki for results, and then save those results so that we don't have to ask every single time. For example, the Day tournament results does a one-time search for results of Day9, and then saves the list of tournaments returned so that we don't have to do that every time. Note that because this search is executed once, concepts that need to be kept up to date need to be purged every now and then.

What are team templates and how do I make them?[edit]

Team templates are used to easily link team icons and team names in tournament and other pages, for instance in brackets. Example: Template:TeamIcon/sk telecom t1

We have a good guide here and you can create them here.

I got promoted, now what?[edit]

Congrats, you've been promoted! Thanks for your contributions! By becoming an editor you've gained a few more rights on the wiki now, check out Liquipedia:editor for an overview.
