Midgame Unit Mixes

General Overview

Tank vulture, Tank Goliath Dropship, and Wraith Tank are the only three unit compositions that you will see being used in a standard TvT mid-game. However, each unit mix should be played with vastly different mind sets and a separate list of goals.

Tank Vulture

Mindset: A Tank Vulture unit composition should be played aggressively. Since vultures move quickly, have a low build time, and cost no gas makes them a throw away unit. You should constantly be spreading mines across the map to constrict unit movement and take advantage of your mobility by harrassing lightly defended expansions.

A Tank Vulture unit mix also allows you to attack into lines of enemy tanks that are already in Siege mode. Using the vultures to take the first few hits gives your own tanks enough time to safely get in range of their tank line.

Goals:

• Provide greater map vision through the use of spidermines and roaming vultures.
• Establish map control by limiting areas your opponent can safely travel.
• Lay spidermines to cover areas your Tank count can not cover (common in the early midgame).
• Allow aggression by breaking down groups of tanks that are overextended or spread too thin.
• Transition out of vultures once the map becomes more defined and tanks cover more area.

Tank Goliath Dropship

Mindset: Because Tanks and Goliaths can't be considered "throw away units", this unit composition should be played with a defensive mindset. You should only look to get aggressive after you have dropships to increase your mobility and pass over tank lines.

Goals:

• Shut down early wraith or drop play
• Force defensive investments (turret or unit positioning) by threatening strong drops.

Transitioning

It is important to note that the effectiveness of a Tank Vulture unit composition severely drops off as the game gets progressively closer to the late game. This is primarily due to the fact that as Tank lines get longer vulture movement becomes restricted. Because of this it is not uncommon to begin with a Tank Vulture mid-game and transition into Goliath Dropship or Wraith unit compositions.
