This article discusses possible counters to the Zerg 9 Pool opening. For the article about performing this opening build see 9 Pool (vs Protoss).
Overview[edit]
When Fast expanding (assuming you scout properly) you will see the 9 Pool and instead of making the Nexus after the Pylon, you will usually make the Forge. The safest follow up would be a Cannon with Probes for defense. Next, you get your Nexus up and usually 2 more Cannons are placed if the Zerg is saving Zerglings for a run-by or a break.
1 Base Play:
- 2 Gateway Zealot production is viable and can be a great counter if the Zerg switches to an economy-oriented style of play.
- 1 Gateway tech on maps with a ramp or narrow choke point is also viable. Usually 2-3 Zealots are built and sometimes a Probe is used to help wall behind the Zealots (the Probe's attack is ranged and gets free hits one any melee units locked in combat with the Zealots). This is often followed by a Dragoon or a Cannon, and then either a Reaver or Corsair rush.
