Pseudo-Swiss format
The Pseudo-Swiss format is a format used in group stages of some tournaments. A (2n - 1)-round Pseudo-Swiss format is technically a n-round n-elimination bracket with (optional) re-seeding after every round. The re-seeding mechanisms can heavily vary between tournaments and organizers.
Differences to swiss format[edit]
- In proper swiss format with an even number of participants, all competitors play in each round. This is not the case with Pseudo-Swiss format.
- Proper swiss format does not eliminate participants while the Pseudo-Swiss format does.
Common Examples[edit]
Dual Tournament Format[edit]
The most common version of the Pseudo-Swiss format is the Dual Tournament Format (also known as "ASL Style Groups"). The Dual Tournament Format is a 4 participant 3-round Pseudo-Swiss format, i.e. a 2-round double-elimination bracket. It is regularly used by a large amount of tournaments.

16 player Pseudo-Swiss format[edit]
The 16 player Pseudo-Swiss format is a 5-round Pseudo-Swiss format with 16 players, i.e. a 3-round triple-elimination bracket.
In this format 16 participants play until they have won 3 matches or lost 3 matches. The participants that win 3 matches advance to the next tournament stage while the players that lost 3 matches are eliminated. In each round participants are matched versus an opponent with the same match score. Usually rematches are tried to be avoided.
