StarCraft Portal: Shortcuts
General Information
Shortcuts are a mechanical aid that StarCraft: Brood War offers. A player can perform an action by selecting a unit/building and then either click the desired command with the mouse, or press the assigned key. Using the keyboard shortens the time to perform mechanical tasks significantly, especially when the order selected further requires a mouse click on the map to assign its target..
This article lists all English shortcuts for issuing commands to units. If Brood War was installed with a different language version (German, Spanish, French, Japanese, etc.) the shortcuts may be different.

General Commands

- Attack, Move, Gather, and Set Rally Point can also be activated with a right-click on a relevant target.

Shortcuts & Special Features
Several commands can have an altered or enhanced effect.
- A combination of waypoints (Shift) and the patrol command enables a unit to patrol up to ten different spots on the map
- With the help of waypoints (Shift) different commands can be queued, for instance Move to a point and then Hold Position
- A worker sent to gather or move on a mineral patch or vespene geyser in vision range will slide through blocking units
- Air units without attack (Overlord, Shuttle, Dropship, Observer) will retreat from fire when moved with patrol command
- A common strategy to block Dark Templar rushes is to block a ramp with SCVs and float a Barracks over this blockade. This way the Dark Templars will not be able to attack if another fighting unit is in their vision range. This can be circumvented when the Dark Templars are given the patrol command on the bottom of a blocked ramp.
- Lurkers have no Hold Position command on their own. When grouped with an Overlord they will get this command.

Unit Production
- Trains each unit at its production facility. Select the relevant building first
Basic Buildings
- Orders a worker to build each structure. When an SCV is selected, B for Basic Structure, then the specific structure Key, then place the building with a left-click
Advanced Buildings & Add-Ons
- Orders a worker to build each structure. When an SCV is selected, V for Advanced Structure, then the specific structure Key, then place the building with a left-click
- Builds Add-ons at particular buildings. Select the Main Building first
