Team Germany
From Liquipedia StarCraft Brood War Wiki
General Information[edit]
It is not sure when exactly the German National Team was founded, the earliest sources are dated to December 2001.[1] The team was organized by different managers over the years and was hosted on the German speaking fan page broodwar.de. Usually the leaders were also relatively skilled players coming from the top clans of the German scene. Over the years the team organized clan wars for fun with other nations via WGTour nation team system. Additionally most nation war leagues were entered. During the prime of StarCraft Brood War a second roster, the Ger Team B, was added to the existing Ger Team A.
During the SCII Beta most players went inactive and the international scene dwindeled. Eventually the official team switched and was re-booted for SCII under new leadership. A news about the official disbanding was not released, so in theory the team still exists.
For the ICCup Nation Wars Beta and Altitude Nation Wars a new team was organized by LML via TeamLiquid in 2011.[2] This team didn't last very long and went inactive after the end of the leagues.
Relationship with Broodwar.de[edit]
The Ger Team history is strongly tied to the history of broodwar.de (bw.de). Since bw.de used to be the biggest and therefore most important source for information regarding Brood War it was only logic to host and organize a national team on this platform. Although the managers of the national team were also part of bw.de's staff, they were no part of the official vacancy. Usually every staff member needs to follow the decision/rules of the webmaster (General_Mengsk) and his head admin crew; in the case of the managers full autonomy was granted. The relation was mostly a joint venture with both parties not interfering with the other side's projects and rulings.
In December 2006 however, the first and only internal disagreement evolved.[3] In the previous years the German Protoss Selector has been caught hacking multiple times, always returning with excuses or with the help of smurfs. His history also got him black listed at the BWCL, which was also part of bw.de's page. Mainly Mondragon, arguably the strongest member of the team, complained about the weak roster and suggested to add the Protoss, that was punished with a lifetime ban. When this suggestions was declined by General_Mengsk the Mondragon threatened to leave the team. Eventually the complete roster moved away and used an external page and WGTour to organize itself. When Selector was caught hacking a few months later, the team came back to broodwar.de.
Recruitment[edit]
Ger Team B[edit]
Multiple forms to recruit players were used for the B-Team. Usually good players with outstanding statistics in the big clan leagues (BWCL, WGTCL, ICCCL, etc.) or notable individual leagues (WCG Germany, ESL Qualification Cups, etc.) received a direct invite. Sometimes players with good records on ICCup, PGTour or WGTour could enter the team on the same way.
Besides that several types of tournaments were hosted on more or less regular basis: invite tournaments, public tournaments or a mix of both. The winner(s) (depending on the type of tour) were either added immediately to the roster or could challenge a player from the team. If such a challenge was won, the winner replaced the loser.
Especially the invites were often lead to some minor arguments, as many of the organisators that were responsible for the decision making were either part of the same clan and/or close friends with the players. In fewer cases the partnership with broodwar.de was a target for similar bias accusations.
Ger Team A[edit]
The roster for the main team almost always recuted directly via invites from the B-Team. In some minor cases public tournaments were hosted, the winners received the same opportunity to challenge a player like in the tours for the B-team. In very rare cases direct invites were handed out to players that were not listed in the B-team before, a prominent example was the invitation of Selector.
The recruitment methods for both teams lead to a relatively high fluctuation within the line up. Especially in the years before the Beta many old and successful players left the team due to inactivity, which increased the importance of the vacancy and opened more opportunities for less known players to get into the B-Team. If those oldschool players however returned, they most times received a direct invitation again.
Post-Beta Team[edit]
The majority of the Germans switched to SCII or stopped playing BW completely after the release of the predecessor. Thus only few high skilled players were left. The recruitment was basically open for anyone who was willing to participate either in the ICCup Nation War Beta league or in the Altitude Nation Wars. In addition to the invites that were handed out by LML the organizer of the ANW, EywaSC-, randomly invited players from the German ICCup Ladder page via PM.
Notable Players[edit]
- FiSheYe: the German Protoss was the strongest player in the line up of Team Germany ever since it was founded until around 2004. In his prime FiSheYe won a silver medal at WCG 2004 and was a guaranteed win in any nation war.
- Mondragon: the Zerg player was known for his outstanding Zerg play and was the leading player ever since FiSheYe became more inactive. He took over as the most successful German of all time. In addition to his 1on1 record Mondragon used to be part of the strongest 2on2 Team with his ally LazeR.
- GoOdy: GoOdy was one of the players that have almost always been part of the roster with only short breaks in the career. He joined the team as Terran and left as Protoss.
- BrEaKdOwN: the Zerg was always in the shadows of Mondragon and FiSheYe, but still one of the best German players of all time. In his prime he could match any foreigner and contributed to many nation wars.
- ScHnibL0r: Schnibl0r's career skyrocketed and ended almost as fast as it started. In the relatively short time he played, he was a serious match for any player, including Mondragon himself.
- Grummel: although being a worthy addition to the roster, the German Protoss was not known so much as solid player, rather than as commentator. In his casts for the German team he often provided a lot of insight concerning recent policy changes, transfers and other trivia.
