The Three Kings

From Liquipedia StarCraft Brood War Wiki

Between 2002 and 2005 there were three Protoss players considered a notch above the other protoss players of the era. They were the only Protoss to consistently qualify and place highly in the StarLeagues until 2005, which gave rise to three new Protoss players referred to as the "Neo Kings of Protoss."

During this period, the Three Kings captured 4 gold medals, 4 silver and 1 bronze in both the OSL and MSL.

The three Kings of Protoss are Reach, Kingdom and Nal_rA. The three Neo Kings of Protoss are Anytime, Pusan and Stork. The three Neo Kings eventually gave way to the six Dragons.

Three Kings[edit]

Reach was the most popular of the three Kings. He earned the nickname "Hero Toss" after being the only protoss player to qualify for the IOPS OSL. He was noted for his macro-oriented style, High Templar usage, and brute force approach to the game.

Reach burst into prominence by beating both Yellow and Boxer in SKY2002 OSL in the semi finals and finals respectively to win the gold medall. Yellow and Boxer were considered the two best players at the time. Reach's victory over Boxer contributed to the Legend of the Fall. He also finished second in the Gillette OSL and UZOO MSL.

Kingdom was nicknamed "Devil Toss". He was an aggressive player with good micro. He won the 2003 MyCube OSL with a 3-2 victory over fellow Protoss King, Nal_rA. Kingdom finished as the runner-up in the 2004 SPRIS MSL

Nal_ra was the most accomplished of the three Kings, as well as the player who stayed relevant for the longest period. He was nicknamed "The Dreamer" after his creative playstyle as well as "Flower Toss" after his affinity for cannon rushes.

Nal_ra finished first in the 2003 Stout MSL and the 2003-2004 NHN HanGame OSL. He was runner-up in the 2003 MyCube OSL and 2006 Pringles MSL Season 1, and placed third in the 2004SPRIS MSL

Neo Kings[edit]

Anytime was known for his Dark Templar usage for which he earned the nickname "Sashin" or "Death God," a reference to the grim reaper. Anytime succeeded the Legend of the Fall by defeating Boxer in the finals of the 2005 So1 OSL. The following year he was the runner-up in the 2006 2nd Shinhan Bank OSL.

Pusan was nicknamed "Spirit Toss" after his playstyle. His PvT games would often reach a point where Pusan would begin to stream units endlessly at his opponent until they conceded. This was called "Ji-Ho" mode and it is where Pusan earned his nickname. Pusan's only accomplishment was finishing third over Casy in the 2005 Shinhan Bank OSL.

Called the "Commander in Chief of No Weak Points," Stork is known for his macro-oriented style and strong control. Stork is also a member of the six Dragons. During the period of the three Neo Kings, Stork won bronze in the 2007 Daum OSL. He won silvers in the 2007 GomTV MSL Season 2 and the 2007 EVER OSL, and went on to win WCG 2007.
