The WCG Korean National Preliminaries 2006 were held from May 30-August 6, 2006.

The top three players qualified for the WCG 2006 Grand Finals in Monza, Italy.

Format

The Korean Final Preliminary qualifying tournament was composed of 16 players in a Final Preliminary offline tournament from August 5-6, 2006.


To select the 16 final contestants, three routes were made available for entry:

  1. Eight participants from multiple rounds of offline tournament composed of professional players[2]
  2. Four participants from an amateur tournament[3][4]
  3. Four participants were given automatic births, including fOru, for his win at the WCG 2005 Grand Finals, and the top three players on the KeSPA rankings at the time the Final Preliminaries were organized.


For the professional tournament, 48 participants competed for the eight spots advancing to the Final Preliminary:

  • Round 1 group stage, where the top two players from each of the 11 professional teams were nominated for a 22-player tournament where the winner of each of the six groups advanced to Round 2
  • Round 2 group stage, where the top six players from Round 1 were joined by 24 more professional players from the KeSPA rankings, those ranked 4th through 30th, where the winner of eight groups advanced to the Final Preliminary
  • All matches in Rounds 1 and 2 were best-of-three


In the Final Preliminary bracket, the format used was as follows:

  • 16 players in single elimination format bracket
  • All matches were best-of-three

Four maps (815 III, Rush Hour 3.0, Arcadia, Sin Pioneer Road) were used during the Professional Leg qualifier while the remaining three maps (Gaia, Azalea, Paranoid Android) were used during the Amateur Leg and Final Preliminary.

The Professional Leg was played by professional players in two rounds. The Round 1 group stage advanced the top six participants plus 24 others into Round 2.

Round 1

Between three to four players were allocated to each of six groups for a single elimination format bracket until the lone winner of each group would advance to Round 2.
