Overview[edit]

The WCG Germany 2009 Grand Finals took place at Games Convention in Leipzig from 31.07.2009 - 02.08.2009. There were five different systems used to determine the final participants, the winner and the runner up qualified for WCG 2009 in China.

Preliminary Qualifiers[edit]

  • WWCL-Rating:
The WWWCL Rating was an artificially generated ranking based on several LAN events. The top three players qualified directly for the WCG Offline Preliminaries.
  • Dragon Cups:
In 2009 three online tournaments were organized in addition to the ordinary qualifier systems. These so-called "Dragon Cups" had a 50€ prize for the winner. Furthermore a spot in the preliminaries was guaranteed.
  • Invite Tournament:
The WCG organization decided to host a special invite tournament for the strongest German players. The top three automatically qualified for the preliminaries.
  • WCG Ladder:
WCG organized a private ladder on their homepage. The games were played on the iCCup server. The top three qualified for the preliminaries.
  • Online Qualifiers:
Another big online cup (512 player grid) was hosted by WCG Germany. The top Three qualified.

Trivia[edit]

  • In his interview with WCG the 14 year old Kolll caused an "upset" when he described Mondragon as "tool old/slow" for ZvZ and was criticized by the community for generally being "too disrespectful".[1][2]
  • A week after the National Finals the news paper "Münchner Abendpresse" published another Interview with Kolll. A few community members spammed spiteful remarks in its comments, so that the article was deleted shortly afterwards.[3]
  • Uzi and Naruto got interviewed by one of the biggest magazines (Spiegel) in Germany during WCG Finals[4]
  • Uzi was one of the few players to qualify constantly for WCG Germany due to the WWCL Rating, despite being relatively low-skilled. She eventually became the mascot of that event.
