Overview[edit]

The "World Dream Tour" (WDT) was hosted in early 2003 by Elky and Smuft[1] in cooperation with WGTour. The underlying idea of the tournament was to find a suitable recruit for the AMD Dreamteam. Every player in the world could register for the tournament after paying a $20 sign-up fee[2]. However, only the winner received an invite to join the professional team for three months; he wasn't automatically granted the status of a professional gamer.

At first the event was welcomed very positively by the community. However, over time more and more controversies concerning participants, pay-outs and the organizers themselves arose.

Format[edit]

The WDT was split in two phases. The first phase was a ladder stage hosted on WGTour.com, from which the 32 best players advanced into the subsequent Elimination Phase. The Elimination Phase was a 32 Man Single Elimination Bracket, using Best of Threes.

Controversies[edit]

One of the first controversies involved the question if former map hackers should be allowed to join the event. Especially the Canadian racepicker Testie was often taken as the prime example of player, who the community felt should have been excluded from the event. However, the administrators of the WDT decided he was allowed to join[3].

Shortly after, the next incident involved the US American Terran Rekrul and another player named Kiddie. Towards the end of the ladder stage Assem was placed on the 33rd rank, while Kiddie took the 32nd position. Theoretically speaking, Assem was not qualified shortly before time was running out, claiming he would not found opponents to play. In the very last hours before the ladder ended, he suddenly won a row of games against the Canadian Testie and PlayBrave. No replays were added to the game, the few which were reported, displayed extremely one sided games with questionable back ground. Assem was now accused of harvesting free wins off his allys[4]. Even though the incident appeared to be clear, the administration decided to grant a win to Assem, openly stating that the judgement might be biased[5].

The organization of the final phase, the Elimination Stage, featured the biggest controversy of the entire event and was still remembered by many prominent community members as the probably the biggest upset in foreign Brood War history[6]. One of the less important last minutes changes by Smuft meant that the grid was not using seeds from the ladder, but randomly generated pairings[4].

The bigger upset were the results of the US American Zerg "Ilnp", who wasn't really notable as player. A few months prior to the event, the player was known to have an APM ratio of only about 160, in the tournament he displayed different hotkey set ups, almost the double APM ratio and unusual strategies. In the Round of 16 Ilnp furthermore lost the first two sets clearly against the Dutch ret. To avoid being knocked out already, he intentionally disced in the second set and ret was forced to repeat the game[7]. Eventually, Ilnp won the event after knocking out better players. Only few days after the event the community was baffled about the result and claimed Ilnp shared his account with an unknown Korean professional; Ilnp declined this accusation[8]. Only in later years it became known that the Korean Oversky played under Ilnp's alias, as well as the facts, that the tournament as a whole was designed force a Zerg player to win and that the disconnect of Ilnp/Oversky against ret was done with the knowledge of the administrator Smuft[6].
