Afreeca Freecs (in Korean, 아프리카 프릭스) is a top Korean StarCraft II team. It was previously known as StarTale, and temporarily as SBENU. As StarTale, it was originally founded by former acting coach of Pantech Curitel and former coach of WeMade Fox Won Joong Wook,[1] together with July and RainbOw.[2] The team originally comprised mostly former Brood War players, most notably the Golden Mouse holder July. They also have a Counter Strike: Global Offensive team and formerly had League of Legends and DotA 2 teams. In April 2015, StarTale announced that it would change its name to SBENU following a new title sponsorship.[3] In January 2016, SBENU stopped sponsoring the team, and the GSL broadcaster Afreeca picked up the team, which was renamed Afreeca Freecs.[4]

On November 21, 2016, it was announced that the team was disbanding its StarCraft II division.[5]

The team was reformed at the start of 2020.[6]

Timeline[edit]

As Afreeca Freecs [edit]

  • January 1, the team is re-estabilished.[7]
  • June 6, TY joins the team.[Inside Source]
  • October 22, soO leaves to serve his mandatory military service.[8]
  • January 23, Afreeca picks up the SBENU StarCraft II team, which takes the name "Afreeca Freecs".[4]
  • January 28, Leenock leaves and Life rejoins in a trade.[9]
  • March 30, Patience joins.[10]
  • April 28, Symbol joins.[11]
  • November 21, StarCraft II roster disbands.[5]

As SBENU [edit]

  • January 20, SBENU ceases to sponsor the StarCraft II team,[12] a few days after the company's CEO was sued for fraud.[13]

As StarTale [edit]

  • January 8 - Avenge retires.[30]
  • January 8 - TricKsteR returns to the StarTale roster after his military service ends.[31]
  • January 8 - Legend, who had previously lived at the StarTale team house, officially joins as a player after spending years as a GSL observer.[32]
  • February 12 - StarTale and Incredible Miracle form a Team Partnership for Round 2 of the 2014 Proleague, with the partnership under the IM banner and including StarTale players living at the IM team house, paving the way for StarTale's Proleague debut. (StarTale's name could not be officially used yet since the team was not yet a KeSPA member.) [33]
  • March 5 - AcE is no longer coach.[Citation needed]
  • September 16 - StuN joins the team and Legend becomes the new head coach. [34]
  • September 18 - Aphrodite leaves, eventually joining MVP.[35]
  • October 13-14 - In announcing what is speculated and then confirmed to be a 2015 Proleague Round 1 roster, it is revealed that Booster, MisS, SuHoSin, TricKsteR and Zero are no longer part of the roster, while free agent aLive (previously of MVP) joins.[36] Also, StarTale announces a Proleague partnership with Yoe Flash Wolves, who had previously partnered with Prime. The partnership creates an opportunity for former player PartinG to return as a partner, but he is barred for the 2015 season due to Proleague regulations stipulating that SK Telecom T1 must buy out his old contract.[37]
  • November 8 - Life wins the 2014 WCS Global Finals as the 14th seed, StarTale's lone representative in the field and the only Zerg left from the quarterfinals onward.
  • November 11 - StarTale reveals that former captain Bomber, who had been successful during personal sponsorship by Red Bull since stepping down from the team, is returning as a partner for the 2015 Proleague. He is later announced as a player-coach.[38]
  • November 28 - Panic leaves to join MVP.[39]
  • January 13, StarTale partners with Quantic Gaming to participate in the 2012 GSTL Season 1 as StarTaleQ.[54]
  • February 13, Chinese former Warcraft III player and commentator MisS joins the team.[55]
  • March 5, FruitDealer moves to StarTale's League of Legends squad as a coach.[56]
  • June 6, it is announced that RainBOw will fulfill his military service on June 26.[57]
  • July 13, it is announced that team ZeNEX will be merged into StarTale.[58]
