Ko "HyuN" Seok-hyun (born January 15, 1988) is a retired Korean Zerg player who last played for Jin Air Green Wings.
He is a former Brood War progamer from South Korea and he began his StarCraft II career in November 2011 with Team SCV Life. On January 3, 2013 he became teamless following the disbanding of TSL.[1] On February 1, 2013, he joined Quantic Gaming.[2]
Biography[edit]
HyuN was a Zerg progamer in Starcraft: Brood War, and was a member of team MBCGame HERO from 2005 to 2011.[3]
His last result in the OnGameNet Starleague was an elimination in the first round of the 2011 Jin Air OSL, and he has an overall record of 84 wins and 110 losses in official Brood War matches.[3]
Though HyuN was known as an online player for quite sometime, in late 2012, HyuN cemented himself as a legitimate tournament performer when he reached the Code S finals of the 2012 GSL Season 5 while simultaneously winning IPL Fight Club for 14 consecutive weeks.
Wings of Liberty[edit]
HyuN began playing StarCraft II in November 2011, and was able to move up to Master League within the month.[3] On November 28, he joined Team SCV Life.[4] He stated that he planned to qualify for the first GSL Code A Championship of 2012, and to compete in foreign events as well.[3] HyuN successfully earned a spot in Code A by defeating Weekend in the 2012 Global StarCraft II League Season 1 preliminaries, hence meeting the objective he set a month before. His stay in Code A was brief, however, as he lost to TaeJa in the Ro 48, falling back down to Code B. HyuN was able to qualify for Code A of the 2012 Global StarCraft II League Season 3 a second time with a victory over Choya in the usual qualification process.
On March 15, 2012, HyuN participated in the ZOTAC Cup Monthly Final February 2012. He was able to take down Breach and Revival but was not able to get any further after fraer took him down and sent him to the 3rd/4th place match. In the 3rd/4th place match, HyuN took down Crane with a score of 2-0 and took 3rd place.
On July 2, 2012, HyuN participated in the ZOTAC Cup Monthly Final May 2012. He was able to take down White-Ra and Satiini but was unable to advance any further than that after he faced fraer and got sent straight to the 3rd/4th place match. In the 3rd/4th place match, HyuN destroyed Seiplo with a score of 2-0 and was able to take 3rd place.
On July 24, 2012, HyuN participated in the ZOTAC Cup Monthly Final June 2012. He was able to take down Welmu, Happy, Bly, and went straight into the finals to face Revival. After a fierce match, HyuN won against Revival with a score of 3-2 and took 1st place.
HyuN had his best GSL run in 2012 Global StarCraft II League Season 5 when he finished second narrowly losing to champion Sniper.
Esports Weekly Match[edit]
On May 4, 2012, HyuN participated in the EWM Season 2 Week 6. HyuN took down TriMaster, Blaka, Vampire, Revival, and YangSongE to advance in to the finals against Brown. HyuN defeated Brown by a score of 2-0 and advanced in to the EWM Season 2 Finals where he would have a shot to obtain a Code A seed if he won against the other weekly winners.
World Championship Series[edit]
2012 WCS Korea Preliminaries[edit]
On July 23, 2012, HyuN participated in the 2012 South Korea WCS Preliminaries. HyuN received a BYE in round one and then took down 심준보, Sage, Maru, and faced Polt in the finals. He was not able to advance any further as he lost to Polt by a score of 1:2 and took 2nd place.
IGN ProLeague[edit]
IPL Fight Club[edit]
On August 6, 2012, HyuN was invited to participate in the IPL Fight Club. His first opponent was Squirtle. HyuN defeated Squirtle by a score of 5-3 and took his rightful seat at top of the throne.
On August 13, 2012, HyuN faced his next opponent for the IPL Fight Club, MajOr. HyuN defeated MajOr by a score of 5-1 and remained at the top of the throne.
By October 16, 2012, HyuN had defeated CranK, Tear, Grubby, aLive, TitaN, GuMiho, ByuN and Sea by scores of 5-1, 5-3, 5-0, 5-0, 5-1, 5-3, 5-3 and 5-1 respectively, being the first player to achieve over 3 wins in the fight club.
On October 29, 2012, HyuN cemented his reign over Fight Club, this time with a 5-4 win over the reigning Code S champion Life, for a total of 12 consecutive wins. This match was the first time anyone had taken more than three games off HyuN in Fight Club. However, he would at last lose his Fight Club title in a 5-2 loss to Leenock after 14 consecutive wins.
Heart of the Swarm[edit]
2013 Starcraft II World Championship Series[edit]
Season 1[edit]
Hyun decided to give up his spot in GSL Code A in order to play in WCS America. Hyun participated in the 2013 WCS America Season 1 Challenger League Qualifiers but was defeated by both puCK and Sage and did not qualify for Challenger League.
Season 2[edit]
Hyun participated in the 2013 WCS America Season 2 Qualifier. This time he was able to advance from the first qualifier by beating players like Arthur, SSanaEE, Center, and SeleCT and therefore qualified for Challenger League.
Hyun faced puCK in his first Challenger League match and was defeated 2-1. He then dropped to the Challenger League group stages and was able to advance from his group in second place to qualify for the following season's Premier League.
Season 3[edit]
Hyun was placed in Group A of 2013 WCS America Season 3 Premier League along with Polt, Sage, and Revival. Hyun was able to advance from his group in first place with a walkover win over an absent Polt and a 2-1 victory over Sage. In the Ro16, Hyun faced a group composed of HerO, Hack, and CranK and finished in third place to be knocked down to Challenger League.
Other Tournaments[edit]
HyuN made his transition to Heart of the Swarm a successful one in 2013 with a win at DreamHack Valencia, including a win over Jaedong in the finals, and a semifinal run at IEM Season VIII - New York that only ended after NaNiwa produced an inspired comeback after HyuN had taken a 2-0 lead.
Quantic Controversy[edit]
At the turn of the new year, it was confirmed that Quantic Gaming had collapsed and left HyuN owed $23,000 in back pay. On New Year's Day, Golden announced that he was organizing a 4-person tournament to support HyuN, which will feature jjakji, StarDust, MC and Symbol as well as Golden and HyuN as casters.[5] With the support of the community, he continued his career, qualifying for the WCS America Premier League and then joining Team ROCCAT on February 4.[6]
2014 Starcraft II World Championship Series[edit]
2014 WCS Season 1 America proved to be vindication of HyuN's decision to continue his career. After defeating Jig in the Challenger League with a convincing 3-0, he continued his form in the Premier League by winning the Round of 32's Group C ahead of Revival, ByuL and TheStC. In the combined America/Europe top 16 in Cologne, he suffered an upset loss against puCK but rebounded by defeating Heart and then puCK in a rematch to take second place in Group A and advance to the quarterfinals, where he was matched against TaeJa in what HyuN himself called a nightmare draw. However, he was able to pull off a shocking 3-2 win and then cruised past Alicia 3-0 in the semifinals to secure a 2014 GSL Global Championship ticket and his maiden WCS regional final against Oz. After the two of them split the first four maps, HyuN seized control by taking Heavy Rain and then reversed Oz's Blink Stalker rush on Habitation Station to secure the championship.
Trivia[edit]
- Gained the nickname "Spider-HyuN" when he entered the stage for his quarterfinal against DongRaeGu at IEM Season VIII - New York wearing a Spider-Man suit in addition to a Spider-Man backpack (the event coincided with Comic-Con New York.)
- Also became famous for his choice of pants at HomeStory Cup.[7]
- Is also famous from his Brood War days for arriving at an ABC MSL group nomination pretending to be drunk.[8]

- He and MC won the Legacy of the Void Archon Mode Show Tourney at BlizzCon 2014 playing as Terran without losing a map.
