The Intel Extreme Masters is ESL's flagship competition sponsored by Intel. The European edition is a huge tournament spanning many months and individual competitions culminating in the European Championship Finals in early 2011. Most of the top European players have chosen to participate including White-Ra, MorroW and DeMusliM.

Tournament Setup[edit]

National Cups

48 participants are selected, all national representatives decided by National Cups. Twelve of these are seeded directly into the championships and twelve are seeded into qualification round 2. The remaining 24 has to go through all stages of the cycle for a chance at winning the crown.[1]

Qualification Rounds (QR)

The Qualification Round 1 is the first round for international competition. The winners of each pair move on to round 2, the loser is eliminated.[2] The round 1 winners meet up with seeded players to play single-elimination matches once more. Winners advance again, this time in to the European Championship of Intel Extreme Masters season V.[3]

European Championship, Group Stage (GS)

The European Championship consist of six groups of four. The winner and runner-up of each group advance to the European Championship Finals. All in all, the top twelve players in Europe will be seen live in the offline finals taking place 2011.[4]

European Championship Finals

The finals in Kiev is played with the following structure:

  • Two Groups of Six (12 players)
  • Top 3 in each group (6 players) qualifies for Playoffs. Winners are seeded into semifinals.
  • Group A 2nd vs Group B 3rd and vice-versa.
  • Single-elimination Playoffs.
