IGN Entertainment is a firm which brand portfolio's includes companies specialised in media, digital distribution, and game technology [1]. Its flagship, IGN, is a casual news/reviews website that focuses on video games, films, music and other media. IGN.com was recognised as the most popular video games website by the Guinness World Records on June 2011 [2]. As of April 2011, IGN Entertainment eSports division organises a recurrent premier event, the IGN ProLeague.
Overview[edit]
Created in September 1996 as the Imagine Games Network, the company featured five individual websites: N64.com (later renamed ign64.com), PSXPower, Saturnworld, Next-Generation.com and Ultra Game Players Online. In 1998, the network IGN.com consolidated the individual sites as system "channels" under the IGN brand. Nowadays, these channels include PC Games, Wii, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, Xbox Live, Wireless, Retro, iPhone, and Android games.
IGN Entertainement also runs several other entertainment-related companies, such as AskMen and GameSpy Technology [1].
Events Organised[edit]
IGN's involvement in the StarCraft II scene began on April 2011, when the IGN eSports division announced an online invitational tournament featuring several top North American players, the IGN ProLeague Season 1. The starleague later developed into a recurring premier event, with the second season opening itself to European players, and the third season featuring Korean progamers and an offline main event, and being endowed with one of the largest prize pool ever distributed in the foreign scene. At the end of 2011, IGN eSports division launched its team league, the IGN ProLeague Team Arena Challenge. On August 2012, the first IGN Pro Team League began.
In order to provide a suited shoutcasting, the company hired several notable commentators, the latest being Erik "DoA" Lonnquist, who previously worked for GOMTV as a GSL Code A shoutcaster [3].
