Overview[edit]

This is a more recent version of the classic Nexus First opening that is able to repel Bunker rushes and small Marine pokes by placing a Photon Cannon at the natural expansion's entrance. It is only viable against gasless openings from the Terran opponent as gas openings, especially those involving Reapers, will be able to take advantage of the late Gateway and Cybernetics Core.

The build gained popularity as it is able to use Photon Cannons to defend against common Marine/SCV/Bunker responses to early Nexus openings (including Marine/SCV all-ins). It also allows for very fast upgrades.

Basic Build Order[edit]

Nexus Forge Expand
  1. Scout with the Probe that makes this Pylon.
  2. Place near entrance of natural to power the Photon Cannon.

Scouting[edit]

  • An early scout is critical to the success of this build. You have to be able to confirm that the opponent is going for a 1 Rax Fast Expand.
  • If not they are not opening with a 1 Rax Fast Expand, either switch to a traditional Nexus First opening (if your Nexus is already down) or switch to a standard 1 Gate Fast Expand. You won't be able to deal with Reaper harassment with this opening, nor is it able to properly deal with early Hellion harassment.
  • Be sure to hold any Xel'Naga Towers that would allow you to spot pushes so that you have enough time to Chronoboost out Gateway units to prepare for them. This will also allow you to make additional Photon Cannons if required.
  • If you cannot tell how hard an opponent is committing to their pressure, it can be a good idea to build additional Cannons even if you might not need them. If you do need them then you can let them finish; if not then you can cancel them.
