StarCraft II is a Real-time Strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. It is a sequel to their 1998 release, StarCraft: Brood War. Unlike StarCraft and Brood War, whose single-player campaigns were split between the three races, StarCraft II is set to be a trilogy, with each game focusing on a different race (Note that this has no effect on multiplayer and one can play as a Protoss or Zerg over Battle.net even though Wings of Liberty's story is told through a Terran point of view):
- StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Terran)
- StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Zerg)
- StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void (Protoss)
Like its predecessors, Warcraft 1-3 and StarCraft: Brood War, StarCraft II is driven by resource management. A player is expected to stake claim to natural resources, harvest them, and invest them into base-infrastructure and military units.
The campaign mode is marked by several missions of varying complexity, difficulty, and a variety of goals. However, StarCraft II is better known for its multiplayer feature which allows players to meet up and play together in both cooperative and competitive settings. Blizzard introduced Battle.net 2.0 to facilitate participation in multiplayer games.
