This page contains a list of terms and definitions that are commonly found when discussing Team Fortress 2.

General Game-play terms[edit]

2K, 3K, 4K, 5K, 6K
A multi-kill during a round, where a single player got 2 kills, 3 kills, 4 kills, 5 kills, or 6 kills respectively.

ADR
Stands for Average Damage per Round.
Airshot
Killing someone while firing mid-air with a weapon, typically with a projectile.
Aimbot
A cheat that helps the player land their shots.

B[edit]

Backcap
Capturing a command point when the enemy team is ahead of it. Typically done on last points when teams are pushing up to second.
BM
Short for Bad Manner(ed).

C[edit]

Caller
See IGL.
Call Outs
The names for the different areas of a map, mostly used to tell the team where an enemy is or where to go.
Camping
A player that camps just stays in their spot for a long time, waiting for enemies.
Clutch
A clutch is a situation where a player wins a round where he usually is at a disadvantage, outnumbered.
Combo
Refers to a Medic and his heal target.
Crater
To die of fall damage, typically after an explosive jump.
Crits
Refers to Critical Hits. Typically used when a medic has full ubercharge on the Kritzkrieg, which grants 8 seconds of guarenteed critical hits.
Crouch-jump
A crouch jump consists of crouching in the middle of a jump, which helps reaching slightly higher platforms than jumping normally.

Demo
A demo is the game file of a match saved, with the *.dem extension.
Can also be used to refer to the Demoman.
Destroyed
A player is destroyed when they are at extremely low health.
It is often used in association with lit to quickly estimate a player's health.
Draw
A match where the map time runs out and both teams are at equal points. In competitive pro games, usually followed by an overtime Golden Cap to determine the winner, not on the official Valve ladder where draws cannot happen due to a lack of a map timer.
Drop
A drop is when a Medic dies holding full ubercharge.

Entry-frag
The first kill in a round.

F[edit]

Flickshot
A very quick reflex shot that kills an unexpected enemy that appears far from the crosshair.
Force
The act of the Medic activating his ubercharge to prevent his death and the dropping of his ubercharge.
Frag
A kill.

G[edit]

GH
Good half. Said at the end of the first half of the match as a show of good sportsmanship.
GG
Good game. Said at the end of the match as a show of good sportsmanship.
Ghosting
Usually said about players that use a cheat to follow players through walls. Can also be said of a dead player that gives information about an alive player when the server allows spectating the other team after death.
GLHF
Good Luck, Have Fun. Said at the beginning of the game as a show of good sportsmanship.
GOAT
Abbreviated version of "Greatest Of All Time", a term used to describe players of high notability and prestige during a time period of the games competitive history.
Golden Cap
Reached when map time runs out and both teams are at an equal score on 5CP. There is no round timer and the first to cap the enemy's last point is declared the winner.
Griefing
A player that is griefing is intentionally sabotaging/throwing a game for his teammates.

Headshot
A shot to the head with a Sniper Primary or Ambassador, which deals the most damage of any shot on other part of the body.

IGL
In-Game Leader. Designates the player that choose the strategies and make the main calls during the game.

K[edit]

K/D
Kills/Deaths ratio. The number of kills divided by the number of deaths. Used to quantify a player's performance.
KPR
Stands for Kills Per Round. It's one measure of a player's performance in a match.
Kritz
Short for Kritzkrieg.
KS
Killsteal. When a player is about to get a kill on an enemy, and another player gets the final shot, thus stealing the kill.

LAN
An offline tournament where all players are in the same building while playing.
Lit
When an enemy is of low health.
Logs
Refers to the stats page of a match. Originates from logs.tf

M[edit]

Match fixing
The act of throwing a game at a professional level, usually for money.
Mid
Denotes the central point in a 5CP map.
MM
Matchmaking. An abbreviation for the competitive ladder.

N[edit]

N1
Nice one. Used to compliment another player for a nice action.
NA
North America. Often used pejoratively to qualify a poor play, for example "an NA push" or "an NA pop". This stems from the term used in Counter-Strike, where North America is notorious for performing poorly overall.
Noob/Newb/Newbie
Designates a new player. Often used pejoratively to say that someone doesn't know how to play.
NS
Nice shot. Used to compliment a nice shot.
NT
Nice try. Used to compliment a nice move or play even though it failed.

Official
A league match.
Overtime
See Golden Cap.

P[edit]

Park the bus
To defend a control point with no intention of pushing against the enemy team.
Typically exploited in the final minutes of a Control Point (5CP) match where a team has a point advantage.
Pick
Getting a pick means killing an enemy without much commitment. Typically used on the killing of important classes, such as the Demoman or Medic.
Play Heals
To stay near your medic to maintain high health and protect them from bombs. Typically done after the enemy medic is killed with your medic remaining alive.
Pocket
Denotes the Soldier that typically sticks next to the Medic.
Pop
To activate an ubercharge.
Prefiring
Firing at a known hiding spot without knowing if there is actually an enemy there, to get a kill if there is actually someone there.
PUG
Pick Up Game, a game with people you don't necessarily know.
Pushing
Advancing towards the enemy side, aggressively.

Q[edit]

Quickscope
The action of scoping and shooting with a Sniper Rifle in a short timeframe.

R[edit]

Roamer
Denotes the Soldier that typically strays from the combo and flanks the enemy.
Rollout
The act of quickly moving to mid.
Rotation
A rotation is a change of positions on the map, and is usually done as an answer to a kill or when having information about what the enemy is doing.
Rush
A rush is a strategy where a team pushes forward the enemy side very quickly, to catch them off guard.

Sacc
Short for Sacrifice Play.
To send a player into the enemy team in an attempt to kill a player, usually the Medic.
Scrim
A practice match between two teams.
Spraying
Firing continuously for a long time with a weapon.
Sticks, Stickies
Refers to a Demoman's Stickybomb Traps. Typically used when it is known there is an enemy sticktrap ahead.
Strat
The strategy a team will follow for a round.

Throwing
The act of intentionally trying to lose a game, usually through griefing
Trade
The action of killing an opponent that just killed a teammate.
Trap
See Sticks, Stickies.
Triggerbot
A cheat that helps players by automatically shooting their weapon as soon as their crosshair hovers over the enemy.

Ubered
A player who is under the effects of a Medic's Übercharge.

Waddle
The action of walking without rocket jumping as Soldier. Typically used pejorative when a Soldier is being ubered and does not rocket jump.
Wallhack
A type of cheat that lets the player see enemy players through walls.

Default
Default - When a map is awarded to a team coming from the upper bracket in a double elimination format.
Smurf
An experienced player that use a new account to play in lower ranked games than his actual level.
TBA
To be announced - Information not yet disclosed by the person or organization in question.
TBD
To be determined - Something yet to be determined such as tournament participants or release date.
