The dreaded Gargoyles of Northrend are voracious flying creatures who revel in slaughter and mayhem. Brought from the frozen north by the armies of the Lich King, these strange, wiry flyers have rough, crystalline hides which protect them from all manner of attacks. In times of great peril, gargoyles can land and condense their hides into a stone-like surface. Though they are unable to attack in this state, Gargoyles can take time to regenerate their wounds and replenish their energies.

Flying attack creature. Can learn the Stone Form ability. Attacks land and air units.

Gargoyles are useful for killing other air units and Creeps. If the enemy focuses too heavily on melee units such as Grunts or Huntresses you can use Gargoyles against them. If the enemy builds air units you can use Gargoyles against them if Crypt Fiends are not an option. Generally Gargoyles are used for scaring players with hit-and-run attacks or for dealing with air units. Most Undead players prefer to build up Frost Wyrms instead of Gargoyles.

Use Stone Form to heal the Gargoyles. You can even do it right next to the enemy since the armor is so thick while the Gargoyles are in Stone Form.

Although Gargoyles have the "unarmored" armor type, they still have armor. They have unarmored for balance reasons.

Notes

  • Due to the high armor bonus players can often use Stone Form right in the middle of a battle area without much fear of being attacked.
  • Gargoyles can always leave Stone Form, but they must wait 30 seconds before returning to it a second time.
  • As the Gargoyle gains Spell Immunity, transforming into Stone Form is a common way to get rid of negative status effects, especially Drunken Haze from the Pandaren Brewmaster who is often picked to counter Gargoyles.

Version History[edit]

Balance Patch History
VersionReleaseBalance Changes
1.32.92020-10-21
  • Buff Gargoyle now has a new toggle ability “Prioritize” which will allow the Gargoyle to prioritize flying units over ground units.
1.31.02019-05-28
  • Buff Gargoyle movement speed increased from 350 to 375.
  • Buff Gargoyle gold cost reduced from 185 to 175.
1.102003-07-03
  • Neutral Gargoyles now require Halls of the Dead instead of Black Citadel.
  • Neutral When "attack-moving", air units now prefer to attack other air units more often than previously.
  • Neutral Flying Unit Improvements: We have turned off collision detection for flying units so that they can now easily pass through each other. This will allow air units to move about more smoothly than before. We have also added "separation behavior" so air units will break out of clusters once they reach a destination.
1.032002-10-09
  • Neutral Gargoyles' ground attack was substantially upgraded. They now do 21-24 damage, up from 16-18 damage. They also have less armor (3, down from 5), but also hit harder against air units, doing 51-63 damage, up from 46-57 damage. Note that they are still just as effective against air units as they were before, but their ground attack has been much improved.
