Weapon Types

From Liquipedia Warcraft Wiki

Weapon types affect how an Attack performs.

Melee[edit]

Weapon types that are classified as melee are affected by:

Melee has nothing to do with the actual Attack Range of the unit. The Mountain Giant's War Club attack has 250 range, but is still considered a melee attack, because of the weapon type.

Normal[edit]

This weapon type is also called melee. It is the only weapon type that is classified as melee.

If the target is out of the range plus the Range Motion Buffer of the attacker when the Attack Instance is created, the attack will miss.

The normal weapon type can have no missiles, but can play weapon sounds.

Examples:

Ranged[edit]

Weapon types that are classified as ranged are affected by:

Ranged has nothing to do with the actual Attack Range of the unit.

Missile[edit]

Missile weapion types have missiles. The missile will deal no damage, if the target is invulnerable, when the missile reaches the target. The missile will also miss, if one of the following conditions is met during any time of the missile's traveling.

Note
Abilities with missiles follow the same behaviour as the Missile weapon type.

Examples:

Missile Splash[edit]

Missile Splash attacks additionally deal area of effect damage to an area around the target. Missed attacks only deal 25% damage, but do trigger orb effects.

Examples:

Missile Bounce[edit]

Missile Bounce bounces to units close to the target.

Examples:

Missile Line[edit]

Missile Line deals damage to units behind the target.

Examples:

Artillery[edit]

Artillery weapion types types have missiles. Artillery attacks can be actively dodged, as they do not target units, but areas. By moving out of the area the attack can be dodged. Artillery attacks add the Attack Ground button to the unit, that orders them to attack a certain area. Units killed by Artillery attacks splatter and do not leave corpses behind.

Normal Artillery attacks additionally deal area of effect damage to an area around the target area. Missed attacks only deal 25% damage.

Examples:

Artillery Line[edit]

Artillery Line deals damage to units behind the target area instead of dealing damage to an area around the target area.

Examples:

Currently there are no units with weapon type Artillery Line.

Instant[edit]

If the target is out of the range plus the Range Motion Buffer of the attacker when the Attack Instance is created, the attack will miss.

The missile does not travel, but is shown at the target.
